Jack’s Jewels

During a geological exploration at Jack Hills in Western Australia in the early 1970’s minerals offering clues to the formation of the Earth’s crust were found. One of these minerals was zircon and, amazingly, it took another twenty years for its best kept secret to be revealed when scientists discovered diamonds inside the zircon crystals. They are thought to be the oldest diamonds formed on this Earth – and the Earth is estimated to be about 4 ½ billion years old. However, we can travel back even further in time to find the very first diamonds.

Meteorites of all shapes and sizes, older by far than the Earth, have been colliding with our planet for millennia, and they too were found to be hiding diamonds within them. You can see specimens of these meteorites in the Natural History Museum, but please don’t go expecting to be wowed by diamonds the size you’re familiar with seeing in diamond rings through the ages. No, they’re minute, or nanodiamonds, less than one-tenth the width of a human hair and although they wouldn’t put a sparkle in any girl’s eye they have certainly proved their strength and longevity under extreme conditions. And the same holds true for the diamonds in any diamond ring you buy today.

Diamond Diversity

Although diamonds have many different uses in the world today ranging from tunnel boring, electronics, mining and glass cutting to dentistry, optical and medical, these diamonds are classified as industrial quality. In fact only 20% of all diamonds mined are deemed gem quality and fashioned into precious jewellery like diamond earrings, diamond necklaces, diamond bangles and the universally desirable diamond ring. And this jewellery reflects brilliantly the style of the era in which it is created.

Ringing the changes

Take diamond rings for instance, and how styles are ever changing to suit current fashion and taste. Tradition of course will always have its place when it comes to a diamond ring to celebrate an engagement but the style of that diamond ring can be as individual and original as the buyer wishes. Then there’s the eternity diamond ring, symbol of eternal love, with a long history as a visible sign of a happy marriage partnership. And we should definitely not forget to mention the wonderful multi-functional diamond dress ring in all its many styles.

Spoilt for Choice

Today, with wedding rings sporting diamonds, eternity rings offered as either "full" or "half" eternity diamond rings, often with a large central diamond, and diamond engagement rings in a myriad of styles, choice has never been greater, such that the names "wedding", "eternity" and "dress" diamond rings are becoming less significant. It’s that ever-changing fashion thing at work again, and with it comes the greatest opportunity there has ever been for the individual to tailor his or her perfect choice diamond ring to any specific occasion.
