Eternity Rings – Birthstones: A Colour Buying Guide
When choosing from the variety of birthstone eternity rings available on the market, the most important piece of research to be done in advance is to determine which birthstones are actually designated for each particular month of the year.
A birthstone eternity ring commemorating a January birth should be set with garnets, a beautiful deep red semi-precious stone. The alternative January birthstone eternity rings are set with rose quartz, a much lighter, almost pink, stone.
February birthstone eternity rings are set with amethysts, deep purple in colour. When amethysts were in high demand for a time, onyx was added to the acceptable birthstone list for February, adding another option for birthstone eternity rings.
March birthstone eternity rings usually contain aquamarine, a blue green stone, or bloodstone, a form of green jasper incorporating flecks of reddish iron oxide. This is one of the few birthstone categories in which the two accepted stones are extremely different in colour tones.
Birthstone eternity rings for April babies are some of the most dazzling primarily because they are set with diamonds. Since this is the most costly of all 12 birthstones, cubic zirconia is often substituted for diamonds in eternity rings. A milky white rock crystal or quartz eternity ring is also acceptable.
May babies are commemorated by birthstone eternity rings containing emeralds, rich and green in colour. The alternative to emerald eternity rings for May are those set with Chrysoprase, a light green stone resembling turquoise in colour.
June birthstone eternity rings are set with one of three options. Pearl eternity rings would be considered the most traditional, but also the least like other eternity rings in appearance. Alexandrite eternity rings would be more traditional in appearance for eternity rings, but their rarity and high cost make them limited in availability and feasibility. They are still very sought after, however, due to their unique colour changing effect. The third option for June birthstone eternity rings is moonstone. Moonstone eternity rings are unique in the fact that the colouring can be so varied from ring to ring as the stone itself resembles an opal with multiple colours flecked throughout in varying amounts.
July birthstone eternity rings can be set with either rubies, deep red to bright red in colour. The mineral alternative is a Carnelian birthstone eternity ring, still bearing the same deep red tone as its counterpart but with accents of orange and black.
August birthstone eternity rings are set with peridot, a light to medium green gem. Alternatively, they can also be found with sardonyx, a variety of onyx with an overall red hue instead of black.
For those born in September, two variations of blue toned eternity rings are available. The traditional sapphire eternity rings is the most common, often bearing a very royal blue appearance. Lapis is the alternate stone for September birthstone eternity rings bearing a lighter shade of blue, often mixed with violet undertones.
October birthstone eternity rings are traditionally set with opals, a milky white gem containing dazzling flecks of gold, silver, blue, pink, and other colours. The alternate stone is tourmaline, typically a deep pink to a light red colour, making for a variety of shades in eternity rings.
November birthstone eternity rings should be selected with either topaz or citrine gems. Since both gems range from light brown to yellowish in nature, they are often confused for each other.
December babies are commemorated with a choice of tanzanite or turquoise, both blue in nature but strikingly different. Tanzanite eternity rings can range from light blue in colour to a dark violet toned blue. Turquoise, on the other hand, is an opaque blue stone often flecked with orange and yellow.
