The Appeal of Eternity Rings

Touted as a symbol of eternal love, eternity rings have remained a staple on the jewellery market for some time now. They have also remained a staple on the finger’s on some quite famous celebrities over the years as well, which continues to help their overall popularity. In recent news, Kevin Jonas, famed pop superstar and teen idol, presented his wife, Danielle Deleasa with a 4 carat diamond eternity ring. Set in white gold, the ring features a bevy of brilliant cut round diamonds to commemorate their marriage. When you think of celebrities and eternity rings, however, one ring in particular will always come to mind.

The most famous eternity ring of all time is said to be the one that was worn on the finger of beloved beauty Marilyn Monroe. The diamond eternity ring was given to her by former husband and baseball superstar, Joe DiMaggio, when they eloped in January of 1954. Even though their eternity as a married couple only lasted nine months, the ring itself will be forever remembered. The ring, which served as her wedding ring and engagement ring, was a stunning platinum band that contained 36 perfectly matched baguette diamonds. The narrow rectangular stones in the eternity ring weighed in at just under 4 carats total weight, a seemingly understated ring for the bombshell best known for her rendition of ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’.

As evidenced by the 1999 auction of the ring by the world renowned Christie’s Auction House, the carat weight of a ring alone can sometimes have very little impact on its fetching price. While the auction house anticipated a selling price of $30 to $50k, possibly lower given that the ring was missing one of its stones, Marilyn’s eternal place in everyone’s heart helped the platinum eternity ring fetch an incredible $772,500.
