Emperor Maximilian Diamond Ring To Be Sold

30 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Not to be outdone by Southeby’s Geneva auction, Christie’s of New York is gearing up for an impressive jewellery auction of their own. One of the centrepiece items that will be placed up for auction is the Emperor Maximilian Diamond Ring. Weighing in at just under 40 carats, the massive stone was once owned Archduke Maximilian in the mid 1800’s. Once considered the ‘Emperor of Mexico’, Maximilian lost power shortly after acquiring the ring. When he was executed, rumours state that he had the diamond ring in a small pouch which was tied around his neck.

Centuries later, the ring once again returned to a highly political party. Owned by Imelda Marcos, wife of the late Ferdinand Marcos. She had purchased the diamond ring just a few years before her dictator husband was removed form power during a massive uprising. Imelda had the stone reset into another ring which was done by world renowned jewellers at Cartier. After her husband’s death, Imelda herself became known for her extravagant lifestyle in particular her shoe collection. She parted with the ring in the mid 1990’s, most likely in an attempt to raise money to pay off the debts her extravagance had accumulated over the years.

Other items that will be available include an emerald brooch once owned by Catherine the Great of Russia. According to the historian’s at Christie’s the brooch remained in Catherine’s family for many generations, passed down over the years until it was acquired by a private collector in the United States in 1972.

Despite the strenuous global economy, Christie’s sales figures have remained strong, totalling nearly $300 million in sales for 2009. Sales records were also set for several milestones. The most impressive was the total price paid for a single diamond. A 5 carat pink diamond sold for $10.8 million last year, raising the bar significantly. The record for the per carat price of any white diamond sold was also broken when a magnificent 32 carat stone labelled the Annenberg Diamond sold for $7.7 million. Auctioneers at Christie’s agree that if a gem is rare enough, someone will always be able to come up with the money to be able to own it. While the wealthier buyers of these rare gems are less likely to be influenced by a struggling economy than most people, jewellery sales across the globe still remain strong.

Bonham’s Auctions Are A Success For Diamond Ring Sales

30 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Would you spend over £80 on a diamond solitaire ring? Probably not, but this week in London, somebody did.

London’s Bonham jewellers finished up their very first large scale auction of fine jewellery this year. Despite the global economy still recovering, the auction managed to bring in a sizeable £2.2m. Bonham’s was more impressed than anyone at the final sales numbers as they were concerned that would not be able to match the success they saw in jewellery sales in 2009. So far, they seem to be off to a very good start with the results they achieve with their first auction of the year.

The high final number is said to be due largely to the four extremely valuable items that were part of the 135 lot auction. The first of the four was a solitaire diamond ring that was estimated to sell for between £55k and £65k. The 5 carat stone in the diamond ring was graded as internally flawless, a rare classification to find in larger stones. The diamond ring surprised auctioneers when it sold for just over £80k.

The next impressive piece up for bid was another 5 carat solitaire diamond ring estimated to sell for between £80k and £100k. With a higher overall grading on the Four C scale than the first ring and a more elaborate setting, this beauty managed to sell for an impressive £222,000. Also selling for the same amount was a 4.74 carat diamond solitaire ring, nearly identical in diamond grading to the previous lot. With an estimated selling price of £100k to £150,000k, the ring once again surpassed Bonham’s expectations fetching the same £222k as the previous lot. Experts attribute the high sale price of these two rings to the immense interest displayed on both items during the bidding process. Ultimately, one lucky person willing to spend over £440k was able to walk away with both rings in hand.

The crown jewel of the auction however, was not in the form of a ring. In fact, it was a diamond necklace. Weighing in at over 14 carats, a pear shaped pendant was saved for the final lot of the auction. Estimated to sell for a steep £200k to £300k, the diamond pendant was said to be one of the most stunning that Bonham’s has ever had to offer. Just as with the other auction pieces, this pendant exceeded all expectations, selling for a final price of £468k.

Not Ready For A Commitment? How About Diamond Earrings?

30 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Dating in today’s world can be challenging to say the least. There are so many notions and ideas pre-marketed towards diamond rings, mostly created by the largest diamond distributors, that it is harder than ever to present a girlfriend with a diamond ring without risking her getting the wrong idea. After all, there is nothing wrong with being in a committed relationship and just not being ready to be engaged or married. Since the notion of promise rings has become somewhat outdated, choosing a diamond ring to show simple affection instead of some other meaning can be difficult. Instead, why not get her a pair of diamond earrings?

With such a wide variety of diamond earrings on the market to choose from, there is bound to be a pair to perfectly suit her personality and the occasion, if there happens to be one. Diamond earrings allow you the chance to give her the beauty and dazzle of diamonds without the risk of giving her the wrong message or signal if you’re not at a point where you wish to change the status of your relationship or take it to the next step.

From diamond hoops to chandelier earrings, the selections are seemingly endless. You can choose from white or yellow gold, the ideal way to best complement her skin tone or personal preference. You can also choose to have the diamond earrings set with coloured stones as accents, perfect for representing her birthstone or favourite coloured gemstone. If she prefers the luxury of simplicity, a beautiful pair of diamond solitaire earrings may be just the perfect gift. The added benefit of solitaire earrings is that the stones can be removed from their settings later on to be incorporated into an engagement ring or promise ring. This not only adds a sentimental touch to the ring, it also takes an item from earlier in your relationship and helps carry it through to the next step with you.

Setting Your White Gold Wedding Rings Apart From The Crowd

30 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

While the concept of white gold wedding rings may seem very simple in nature, there are several variations you can incorporate into your rings t make them more unique and customized to your personality and preferences.

One of the easiest ways to make your white gold wedding rings pop is by focusing on the details that go into them.  If you are a nature lover, choose a white gold wedding ring etched with tiny flowers or leaves.  For a more modern appeal, opt for geometric patterns or designs incorporated into the surface of the band.  If romance is more your style, nothing says I love you more than a white gold wedding ring etched with your favourite line of poetry.  You can also choose a special quote or saying that the two of you share to have scribed on the inside or outside of the white gold wedding rings.

While the white gold wedding ring should never try to draw too much attention away form the engagement ring itself, there’s no reason it can’t have a little sparkle of it’s own.  One of the hot trends is having tiny diamonds or other coloured gemstones inlaid into the white gold wedding rings.  These typically range anywhere from three to five small accent stones in each band, just enough to give them that hint of sparkle to catch the eye.

If you want a little more sparkle, perhaps not enough to overshadow the engagement ring but enough to still blend the two together, opt for an eternity style white gold wedding ring.  While the eternity ring design was once reserved for anniversaries of childbirth, they are becoming more and more popular when used in place of traditional white gold wedding rings.  The key to using this design is ensuring the engagement ring itself has enough dazzle and brilliance of it’s own to still remain the central focus.

Overall, there are numerous ways to ensure your white gold wedding rings are as one of a kind as possible.  By using various etching techniques and patterns, adding a hint of sparkle, or opting for all out dazzle, you can make sure to turn heads and get people talking whenever they see your stunning white gold wedding rings.

Unique Eternity Ring Designs

30 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Everyone is familiar with the standard eternity ring design.  They typically features princess cut stones, set in either yellow gold, white gold, or platinum, which span the entire band or simply cover half of the ring.  The most common setting used for eternity rings is the channel setting, allowing the diamonds to rest flush within the ring itself, eliminating the chances of snagging.  There are, however, several more interesting designs on the market that can help you ensure your next eternity ring stands out from the crowd.

One of the most affordable ways to make your eternity ring unique is to opt for sparse set diamonds.  This type of eternity ring features bezel set stones that are inlaid into the band at set intervals, offering the sparkle and shine of an eternity ring, with a much lower price point.

Another trend that seems to be all the rage right now is moulded eternity rings.  While channel set rings are completely smooth on either side, moulded rings are fitted to the outlines of the individual stones.  An eternity ring featuring round stones, for example, would have a wave like appearance on either side.  Another popular choice is princess cut stones turned diagonally, creating an angled pattern where the metal wraps the outer edges of the diamonds.

For another twist on the classic eternity ring design, many people are opting for baguette diamonds in a channel setting rather than square stones.  The elongated rectangle shape of the baguettes offer a beautiful variation on the traditional design.

For a more charming twist, you can always opt for more than one cut of diamond.  A growing trend in eternity rings features round and square stones alternating in the band.  While it may seem unconventional at first, the whimsical nature of the design is definitely keeping it on the must have list.

While many eternity ring variations focus on the stones within the rings, others earn more towards the bands themselves.  For an added sparkle, choose a band that is etched or embossed on either side of the stones, often giving the appearance of much larger stones from a distance even though it is simply a design added to the band itself.

Just How Much Should You Spend On That Diamond Ring

29 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

In days gone by, an engagement ring was a token of love as well as a guarantee that the man proposing marriage had enough financial stability to successfully support the woman he wished to marry. In essence, the diamond ring was intended just as much for her family as it was for her. The larger and more expensive the diamond ring was, the more comfortable of a lifestyle the woman could look forward to living during her married years.

Not too long ago, one of the leading diamond ring distributors began a campaign to explain exactly how much a man should be spending on a diamond ring intended for engagement purposes. Their formula encouraged the man to seek out a diamond ring that was equivalent to two months of his salary in price. The formula seemed logical enough and, for many people, it is still very much relied on today as a gauge to determine the correct price range the diamond ring should be in.

What you need to keep in mind, however, is that the formula was created by one of the major player’s in the diamond industry. The most important factor in the equation when selecting a diamond ring shouldn’t be limited to your take home pay. Instead, it should be about what type of diamond ring best expresses the personality and visual preferences of your potential bride to be. There are many times when the ‘perfect’ diamond ring may only cost the equivalent of two weeks pay as opposed to two months. For some, the ring could cost four months salary if the perfect style and design happens to be a pricier piece. The cost of diamond rings is also greatly influenced by the price of gold, still the most common precious metal used for engagement rings. In essence, a ring that costs two months salary one minute may cost three months salary the next.

While the formula may be a great way to give you a general ballpark price range for your ring, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to look above or even below that price point. You may not necessarily want to look for the cheapest ring on the market, but keep in mind that breaking the bank for the largest ring you can find is not the best idea either. While personal financial situations will contribute a great deal to the amount of money you are able to spend, the ‘perfect’ ring is ultimately determined by the look on her face when she says ‘yes’, not the price tag.

Choosing The Right Diamond Ring

29 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

If you are in the process of shopping for diamond rings, it is essential that you familiarize yourself with the general styles of rings on the market. Since there have been so many recommended occasions tied to certain types of diamond rings, it helps to know if you are buying the correct ring for the correct milestone.

The most basic diamond ring of them all is the diamond solitaire. Consisting of a single stone in a precious metal setting, the solitaire ring was long considered the standard for engagement ring purposes. Over the years, however, styles of acceptable engagement rings have broadened, creating a much larger design pool to choose from. The solitaire ring, while not the only style of engagement ring, still remains highly symbolic with regards to marriage proposals.

A diamond eternity ring is designed for two primary purposes. They are intended to be used as gifts to celebrate a wedding anniversary, sometimes replacing the wedding band itself, or they can be given to commemorate the birth of a couple’s first child, sometimes including the child’s birthstone as well as diamonds. Both the full eternity rings and the half eternity rings can be used to represent these two milestones in a relationship.

The three stone ring, like the eternity ring, is also used as an anniversary gift. The stones are symbolic of the couple’s past, present, and future. While some brides to be are choosing a three stone ring in place of an engagement ring, they are typically reserved for anniversary purposes.

The right hand ring, or dress diamond ring, was intended to be marketed towards single women who didn’t feel the need to be in a relationship in order to be able to wear a diamond ring. Because there is no specific style associated with the right hand ring, any of the above designs can be used to represent a woman’s independence.

While there are several other styles and types of diamond rings on the market, these are the primary categories. Keep in mind, however, that just because a ring is traditionally used for one purpose that doesn’t mean you can’t choose your own tradition to create.

Hertfordshire Diamond Ring Heist

29 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

If you suddenly find yourself in the position to buy several ‘more than affordable’ diamond rings, you may want to think twice about the purchase. A man in Hertfordshire was attacked by several men this week and, in the process, was robbed of nearly five hundred gold and diamond rings that he had in his possession. Authorities have not released the nature of the man’s work, but the quantity of jewellery he was carrying on his person is said to be related. According to the police, the man was struck in the face as he was getting out of his vehicle on the corner of Gidian Court and Park Street lane in St Albans.

The men were reportedly seen driving in a Toyota Avensis with a blue T registration and were reportedly following the victim for some time, waiting for him to reach his destination and exit his vehicle. The primary attacker is described as being “Eastern European appearance, 5ft 8in (1.72m) tall and aged between 30 and 35” according to Det Sgt Nina Winfield. His three accomplices are also described as Eastern European, in their late twenties, and wearing jackets and jean.

Authorities are interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed the events and may be able to provide any leads as to the description of the attackers. They are also asking that anyone that comes upon the chance to buy some very well priced diamond rings contact them as soon as possible with details on the seller. The chances of the attackers trying to sell the diamond rings quickly is anticipated.

While the hot diamond ring may be a ’steal’ as far as price goes, as soon as it is traced back to the crime, it will be seized for evidence and you will most likely not be reimbursed for any amount you did pay for it. This incident is yet another of the many examples of why you should always choose a reputable merchant from which to purchase your diamond jewellery. Not only are you guaranteed authentic and legitimate merchandise, you also know you are getting the best quality for your money as well as a product warranty.

White Gold Wedding Rings Get The Disney Touch As Well

29 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Disney princess are not only lending their inspiration to the engagement ring market, they are also inspiring their own line of coordinating white gold wedding rings to pair up with their royal engagement ring counterparts.

The Snow White band features multiple round cut diamonds set into a moulded white gold wedding ring.  The way the metal conforms to the shapes of each round stone helps to create the perfect white gold wedding band to represent one of the most famous princesses in Disney history.

The white gold wedding ring dedicated to the beautiful Sleeping Beauty is a royal beauty indeed.  Featuring a band fully set with delicate princess cut diamonds.  To further add to the beauty of this white gold wedding ring, the portion of the band surrounding the stones in their eternity ring design is cast with a unique embossing, adding even more sparkle and shine.

Everyone’s beloved princess, Belle, nicknamed aptly as Beauty for her stunning visage, has a white gold wedding ring dedicated to her that truly does envision the concept of beauty itself.   The white gold wedding ring itself is created in yet another eternity ring design, this time featuring a series of small round diamonds set around the circumference of the band.  To add a touch of uniqueness, the metal holding each stone in place is slightly cut into, allowing a tremendous amount of light to pass through, as well as under, the stunning diamonds.

The Cinderella white gold wedding ring possesses the same intense dazzle as the Sleeping Beauty band.  This ring, however, features round cut diamonds in place of the square princess cuts that are in the Sleeping Beauty band.  This white gold wedding band, however, features the same beautiful band embossing that helps set both of these eternity ring styled white gold engagement rings apart from the rest of the pack.

The Ariel white gold wedding ring focuses on the beauty of the baguette cut.  Set in a simple yet elegant channel set design, this white gold wedding ring truly gives the appearance of something so beautiful you may only be able to find it under the sea.

Last, but definitely not least, the Jasmine white gold wedding ring opts for detail rather than stone quantity.  This band uses sparsely set princess cut stones mounted diagonally into the band, along with delicate scroll accents to show the world just how amazing slightly understated designs can be at times.

Disney Princess White Gold Engagement Rings

29 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Every little girl, at some point in time or another, dreams of the handsome Prince who will come and sweep her off her feet and carry her away to his massive castle where her true fairytale wedding awaits.  Disney has come to the rescue, however, with their new line of white gold engagement rings based on each of their five most popular princesses.

The Cinderella white gold engagement ring features a stunning princess cut stone in the centre, flanked by two smaller stones on either sides.  All of the stones are surrounded by numerous smaller diamonds and mounted in an eternity ring design.

The next white gold engagement ring in the collection is dedicated to Sleeping Beauty.  It features the same elegant centre princess cut stone, this time haloed with a bevy of diamonds in a unique geometric shape.  The setting potion of the band is rich with luxurious inlay cuts and the ring portion is fashioned in the eternity ring design as well.

One of the most dazzling in the collection, the Snow White white gold engagement ring features three beautiful round cut stones which serve as the focal point for the design.  While seven diamonds may have seemed appropriate for this particular design, the white gold engagement ring instead features a band set entirely with smaller round diamonds.  The metal in the band itself is moulded around each stone, creating a unique bubble effect for this unique white gold engagement ring.

Similar in the basic design, the Belle white gold wedding ring is created in a three stone design, beautifully set with one large round diamond, shouldered on each side by two slightly smaller round stones.

The Jasmine ring is, by far, the most unique of all the five designs.  This dazzling white gold engagement ring features three princess cut stones, each set diagonally to create a unique angled design.  Each stone, of course, is surrounded on all sides by smaller diamond accents.

Lastly, the Ariel ring features a design as unusual and intricate as the character it was based on.  This white gold engagement ring combines round stones, baguettes, and unusual bezel setting and inlay cuts to create a dazzling masterpiece.

Caring For Your White Gold Engagement Ring

28 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

One of the most appealing things about a white gold engagement ring is it’s pure beauty.  The way the sparkling diamond reflects off the silver toned mirror like surface of the metal makes it the perfect combination for style and elegance.  In order to keep your white gold engagement ring looking its best though, you need to make sure you take the proper steps to help maintain it.

The first thing to do to make sure your white gold engagement ring will last is to make sure you are purchasing it in the right size.  Never shop for rings first thing in the morning, when your fingers are the least swollen.  A white gold engagement ring that fits just right in the morning may be impossible to get off come dinnertime.  On the contrary, never buy a ring in the evening hours.  If you fit a white gold engagement ring to your finger at night, it could be falling off by the next morning.  The best time to get fitted for a white gold engagement ring is around mid-day, preferably right after lunch.  By ensuring a proper fit of your new white gold engagement ring, you are eliminating the chance of the ring slipping off your finger, or being too uncomfortable to wear.

Invest in a quality home jewellery cleaner for your white gold engagement ring.  By cleaning your ring on at least a weekly basis, you prevent any heavy build-up on the diamond, always allowing it;s full fir to shine through.  Drop in liquid cleaners work well, just make sure the one you are purchasing is indicated specifically for use with your white gold engagement ring.  Cleaning cloths are also fantastic and work in a snap.

At least once a year, be sure to take your white gold engagement ring to a professional jeweller to be cleaned.  This will not only give your white gold engagement ring a detailed cleaning, the jeweller can also inspect the ring and check for any loose prongs or other repairs that may be needed to ensure the safety of the stone.  The jeweller may also recommend a re-plating with rhodium every other year in order to keep the white gold engagement ring looking it’s silvery best.

How To Select The Perfect Diamond Ring-Size Matters

28 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

If you are on the market for a diamond ring for your beloved, regardless of whether it is an engagement ring, an eternity ring, or just an ‘I Love You’ ring, there are several tricks to keep in mind when selecting the perfect piece of jewellery.

One of the trickiest parts for some people is figuring out what size ring to buy. If you have been married for years, this may be an easy task. For new couples, however, the deed gets slightly trickier. Your best bet is to take her jewellery shopping, not necessarily for a diamond ring though. Tell her you want to get her a birthstone ring or some other similar piece of jewellery for an upcoming birthday, holiday, or special occasion. Take her to the jewellery store under the guide of wanting to see what styles of rings or choices of gemstones she likes best. As she tries on gemstone rings from the case, you will be able to determine what size ring she wears. Even is she isn’t trying jewellery on the right finger, a well trained jeweller will be able to determine the correct size depending on where you plan the diamond ring to be worn.

Another option is to ask her family or friends. While her brother-in-law may not know her ring size off the top of his head, there’s a good chance her sister or best friend may know. Even if they don’t, I’m sure they can find a reason to conveniently borrow one of her rings for a day in order to determine what size she wears.

The final choice is to do the deed yourself. If you have access to her jewellery box, and aren’t at risk for being caught ‘borrowing’ any of her jewellery, it should be easy enough for you to get one of her favorite rings to determine what size it is. Make sure to choose a ring that you know she wears on a semi-regular basis. It won’t do much good to have a ring sized that she wore as a teenager that only fits on her pinky now.

Even if all of these methods fails, take heart in the fact that any precious metal ring can be sized to fit perfectly at your local jewellery shop, usually in a matter of hours.

Is It Wise To Surprise Her With A Diamond Engagement Ring? (Part 2)

28 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The main downside to proposing to your future wife without a diamond engagement ring in hand is, just that, proposing to your future wife without a diamond ring in hand. The tradition of a marriage proposal has long involved the presentation of an engagement ring when popping the question. If you have decided to opt for shopping or a bridal set with your fiances input once she has accepted your proposal, however, there are several ways to creatively get around the lack of a diamond engagement ring when asking for her hand in marriage.

Just because you want to wait to buy her diamond engagement ring together doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t buy her another type of diamond jewellery in advances. Many future husbands are opting for a pair of diamond earrings, a diamond pendant, or a diamond bracelet to offer up to their future brides. These pieces tend to be much easier to shop for than a diamond engagement ring, but still offer the beauty and luxury of diamond jewellery to make the moment memorable.

One of the cutest ideas is to still drop down on one knee with a ring box in hand but, instead of an actual diamond ring, have a toy ring in the box. She may be taken off guard at first, but when you explain to her that you wanted her to be able to pick her dream engagement ring and bridal set with you, she will completely understand that you spent all of 25 cents on her ‘proposal’ ring.

If you still want to go with the idea of presenting a ring when you ask for her hand in marriage, and are talented enough to figure out her ring size in advance, you can always select a birthstone ring or other ring set with her favorite gemstone. Whether it be an emerald ring to match her green eyes, a heart shaped ruby to represent your love for her, or even a princess cut sapphire to make her feel like royalty, a less expensive ring that she can wear on special occasions is an ideal alternative when choosing to select a bridal jewellery set together after the proposal.

Is It Wise To Surprise Her With A Diamond Engagement Ring? (Part 1)

28 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Should you go it alone when shopping for diamond engagement rings? More and more men are deciding that my not be in their best interest do do so and are increasingly involving their future brides in the diamond ring buying process. While the tradition of a surprise wedding proposal, down on one knee, ring box in hand, still remains strong, the idea of that surprise including the actual diamond engagement ring may be beginning to fade somewhat.

More and more jewellers are carrying a wide array of bridal jewellery sets. These sets include the diamond engagement ring as well as the his and hers wedding band sets. Buying all three rings in a set not only saves money, it also ensures that all three pieces are coordinated with each other. This eliminates the issues sometimes caused when the engagement ring that was chosen before the proposal doesn’t quite sit right with the wedding band that was chosen before the wedding. Buying the set ensures the engagement ring and wedding band are a perfect fit.

Unless you know your bride to be’s exact ring size, precious metal preference, favourite diamond shape, and numerous other preferences that go into purchasing a diamond ring, you may want to hold off on buying one until you can actually get her input as well. Remember, the engagement ring is something she will, hopefully, wear every day for the rest of her life. For that reason alone it should be a ring that not only represents your love for her, but also her personal tastes in jewellery. Shopping for a bridal jewellery set together can also be be of the first major purchases you make as a couple. It is not only a perfect way to guarantee she will be as happy with her bridal set as she can be, it can also be a great bonding experience to signify the beginning of your shared life together. While this trend may make the surprise wedding proposal a bit more challenging, there are a few creative ways around that potential obstacle.

White Gold Wedding Rings For Any Budget

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Everyone knows that white gold wedding rings are a hot commodity these days.  What many people may not necessarily know s that there are several ways to get the white gold wedding ring of your dreams at a much lower cost than what you might anticipate.

One of the first things to do before shopping for white gold wedding rings is to narrow down the style or styles you are interested in.  Once you have your design in mind, it makes the shopping process much easier and helps determine which budgeting tricks will work best for you.

If you are looking for a white gold wedding ring in an eternity design, one of the key points to keep in mind is stone sizes.  For example, a single white gold wedding ring in an eternity design with 1/2 carat stones could cost a significant amount of money.   If you keep in mind that smaller sized stones are much cheaper on a price per carat basis, you will discover that it could potentially be much more affordable to opt for a white gold wedding ring set with 1/4 carat stones.  In fact, you could probably spend the same amount of money as you would on the 1/2 carat version and purchase multiple stacking eternity styled white gold wedding rings instead.

When going for a three stone white gold wedding ring, size can matter just as much.  Remember, the emphasis in a three stone white gold wedding ring should be on the centre stone.  While it may be nice to have larger side stones, smaller ones tend to work just as well.  If nothing else, you can use the money you’re saving by opting for smaller side stones to increase the overall size of the centre stone.

When it comes to white gold wedding rings in a solitaire design, cut tends to play a very important role.  Round and oval cut diamonds use approximately half of the rough diamond they are cut from, with the waste typically being use for industrial applications.  Emerald and princess cut, on the other hand, can utilize over 80% of the rough diamond, making the much more affordable and easier to cut.

Affordable Eternity Rings

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

If you’re on the market for a new eternity ring and want some quick tips and tricks to help make your new purchase more affordable, you’ve come to the right place.  When most people think of eternity rings, they immediately associate them with high costs, primarily due to the quantity of diamonds that are in the eternity rings themselves.  An eternity ring, however, does not necessarily have to be as costly as most people think and here’s why.

One of the easiest tips to cutting the price on an eternity ring is to opt for a half eternity ring as opposed to a full one.  While the concept of a full eternity ring may be appealing, no one is ever really going to see the diamonds mounted on the underside of the ring, making them an extravagance more than a requirement.  Cut the number of diamonds in half you you instantly knock quite a hefty amount off the selling price.

You also need to choose your precious metal wisely.  While platinum is more valuable than white gold, it also has the price tag to match.  By going with a white gold eternity ring, instead of a platinum one, you can save even more money in the long run.  On the plus side, the majority of people can’t tell the differences between platinum and white gold from a distance any way.

If you prefer yellow gold, then you’re in luck.  First of all, try to stick with 14kt gold instead of 18kt gold.  Like platinum, the 18kt gold is more valuable, however, the 14kt gold is more affordable and more durable.  Another benefit of yellow gold relates to the quality of the diamonds being set into the eternity ring itself.  White white metals tend to work best with stones as colourless as possible, yellow gold gives you a little more leeway.  In fact, many consumers prefer diamonds with a hint of yellow in them for their yellow gold eternity rings.  The tint of the stones is said to give a much warmer and natural feel to the jewellery, as well as accent skin tones much better as well.

Beauty Of White Gold Engagement Rings

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

While yellow gold was once the colour of choice for engagement rings, white gold engagements rings are quickly moving towards top spot on the bridal jewellery market.  In order to be able to truly appreciate the beauty of a white gold engagement ring, however, it helps to understand just what white gold truly is.

White gold engagement rings are created using traditional yellow gold that is blended with a set percentage of other white metals, including palladium, silver, and nickel.  White gold engagement rings can be found in several varieties of gold concentrations, notated with the use of 18kt, 14kt, or 9kt.  The highest concentration of pure gold in a white gold engagement ring is 18kt, comprised of 75% yellow gold and 25% other white metals.  Both 9kt and 14kt white gold engagement rings are created with much lower concentrations of pure gold.  While it is true that an 18kt white gold engagement ring is more valuable, white gold engagement rings with lower gold concentrations can often be much more durable.

Regardless of the concentration of gold used in white gold engagement rings, the true colour of white gold tends to be more on the grey scale than silver toned.  In order to create the white glossy finish consumers have come to know and love, the white gold engagement ring must be coated with an additional alloy to amplify its colour.  Rhodium, a white metal very similar to platinum in nature, is used to coat the white gold engagement rings in order to change them from grey to white.  Because this coating can eventually wear down with use and over time, most jewellers recommend having your white gold engagement ring re-coated with rhodium every two to three years.  They also advise taking the time to ensure the jeweller that will be refinishing your white gold engagement ring is a reputable one.

Overall, white gold engagement rings are beautiful and durable.  They are also much lower in cost than platinum rings, allowing them to work better for lower budgets.  White gold engagement rings are also extremely popular and, therefore, very common.  This alone makes finding a reputable jeweller practised in repairing, altering, or refinishing white gold a much easier task.

Blood Diamond Controversy

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

In various regions of the world, acts of war are being financed by the blood diamond trade. Also known as a conflict or war diamond, a blood diamond is one that is mined, usually by forceful means, and used to finance war, insurgency, and terrorist activities. In order to decrease the ability for groups to use blood diamonds to finance their activities, a joint effort between various parties involved in the diamond industry produced the Kimberley Process. This certification program was the collaborative effort of diamond miners, government agencies, and diamond distributors. It created a chain of custody for all diamonds entering the retail market. For a diamond to be certified under the Kimberley Process, the distributor had to be able to trace the exact origins of the diamond, from its discovery in the mine up to its arrival at the retailer, ensuring that no part of the money produced by the mining or sale of the diamond was used to finance any controversial military activities. While there are still groups able to get uncertified diamonds onto the market, the number of conflict diamonds has decreased significantly since the Kimberley Process was enacted in 2002. One of the best ways to ensure you are doing your part to further reduce the ability for unsanctioned groups to profit off the sale of blood diamonds is to verify you are purchasing your new diamond from a reputable dealer, such as Purely Diamonds, known for their wide selection of exclusively conflict free diamonds.

Making Your Dream Diamond Ring A Reality (Part 2 of 2)

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Now that you know exactly what features you are looking for in a ring, take your list and find a jeweller who can make your dream ring a reality. Make sure you have your list that details exactly which metals, settings, stone shapes, and styles you prefer. Also, feel free to take pictures of the diamond rings that may be ‘almost perfect’ to give the jeweller a better idea of what you are looking for in a finished product. If you are more of a visual person, there are numerous jewellery sites on-line that allow you to virtually create your diamond ring. By selecting your metal, stone shape and carat weight, and band style, you can get a better idea of what particular styles of rings will look like. Keep in mind, however, that many of these sites are somewhat limited in the styles they offer for their custom virtual diamond ring options. They are geared primarily towards the woman who still wants a rather simple and traditional ring and just wants to be able to choose the basic qualities of the ring itself. If you are interested in a more detailed design, or a more intricate setting, the click and buy ring design may not be your best choice.

There are, however, many reputable jewellers online, and in person, that will let you choose the details of your rings from start to finish. Skilled jewellers can often take a photo or sketch or a ring and recreate it perfectly. They can also work directly with you to take multiple designs, discuss the particular features of each ring you are most attracted to, and find the best way to combine all of your favorite aspects of each piece into one dazzling diamond ring. Some online jewellers will simply let you email them a list of your preferences, photographs or rings you like, or even custom sketched of the ring you want. They can then work with you one on one to create the exact ring to suit your personality, taste, and budget. Eve virtual storefronts can use the wonders of technology to help you visualize your creation before it is made, ensuring that every aspect of the rings itself is to your liking.

So, ladies, you perfect dream diamond ring can still be a reality…….

The Benefits Of Designing Your Own Diamond Ring (Part 1 of 2)

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Admit it ladies, ever since you were a little girl you have had the exact details of the perfect wedding swirling around in your head, including the perfect marriage proposal, and, most importantly, the perfect diamond ring. When it actually comes time to get that engagement ring, more and more couples are choosing to make the purchase together in order for the bride to be to make sure she is, in fact, getting her dream ring. The groom to be will often find a clever way of proposing without a ring or using a stand in ring for the proposal and then they can shop for the actual ring, once she has hopefully said yes of course. The dilemma comes into play once you start shopping for the perfect diamond ring. You’ve found the perfect stone, but it’s set in the wrong type of metal. You’ve found the ideal design, but the stones aren’t the right cut. You’ve found the absolute perfect ring, well the almost absolute ring, but the stones within it are too highly rated, taking the ring too far out of your price range. The solution? Design your own diamond ring.

Designing your own diamond ring is the perfect choice for the picky bride to be or even the woman who just knows what she wants but can’ seem to find it on the retail market. Even if you’re not sure what type of ring you want, shopping for one may start to give you a better idea of what you might consider the perfect ring. Your best bet is to take notes as you go, if you don’t already have the exact specifications in mind. Make sure to take down what precious metals you like best, whether it be white or yellow gold, platinum, or something else. Decide while browsing which particular shaped diamonds tend to catch your eye the quickest, or even the most frequently. Use the rings you tend to like best to get an idea of what styles and settings you tend to prefer.

The Key To Buying An Affordable Diamond Ring-Precious Metal

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

One of the easiest ways to help cut costs when shopping for diamond rings is by carefully selecting your precious metal. Platinum diamond rings are, of course, all the rage nowadays, but they do come with a fairly steep price tag attached to them. If you are shopping on a budget, or have limited resources with which to purchase a diamond ring, consider some other alternatives.

Before platinum began to rise in popularity, white gold was the metal of choice when a silver luster metal was desired. White gold diamond rings are not only significantly more affordable than platinum rings, most people won’t be able to tell the difference. Besides, when most people look at your diamond ring they will be focused more on the diamond itself and the colour of the metal, not necessarily what kind of metal it actually is.

Palladium is also another hot new trend on the jewellery market. With the UK recently passing regulations requiring palladium to be hallmarked to ensure its quality, it is quickly becoming one of the preferred precious metals for diamond rings. It has the same appearance as platinum, but comes at a fraction of the cost. Palladium is still slightly higher in cost than white gold, but tends to have a much stronger level of wear and scratch resistance. While palladium diamond rings may be a bit hard to find at the moment, they should be fairly abundant soon enough as the demand for the new trend in precious metals increases.

Above all, when you are looking for the best deal on a diamond ring, keep an eye on the precious metals market. While white gold may be the most affordable precious metal on the market right now for diamond rings, if the demand for platinum begins to waver, it could very well affect the price of the metal. Likewise, as the gold market continues to grow in price, palladium and platinum may become the cheaper options over time. The price of precious metals is driven by the supply and demand for them in the marketplace. If you do have your heart set on a particular metal that may be slightly out of your price range, by keeping an eye on these prices, you may be able to get a bargain by catching the market at just the right time.

The Key To Buying An Affordable Diamond Ring-Carat Weight

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

One of the most important factors that can affect the price of a diamond ring is the carat weight of the stone or stones contained within it. If you are looking to save a little money when purchasing a new diamond ring, or you just happen to have a limited budget to work with, there are ways to find a beautiful diamond ring that wont necessarily break the bank.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

While women used to think that the larger the diamond was on her finger, the more beautiful it was, the case isn’t always so today. More and more women are opting for more classic and sophisticated diamond rings, emphasizing ornate settings and details in the bands as opposed to larger stones. These rings get noticed because of their overall beauty, not just the size of the stone set within them.

If you are looking to cut costs, consider a diamond ring that possesses a more intricate setting and band with a smaller centre stone. This will give an additional focal point, other than the stone itself, and not draw as much attention to the size of the stone as it will the the actual ring. With the continued rise in popularity of vintage and vintage inspired rings, these types of designs are plentiful on the market today, as well as being extremely trendy as well as timeless.

Another way to de-emphasize the size of the centre stone is by selecting a ring that also possesses shoulder stones, or side stones. The larger the carat weight of a single stone, the higher the per carat price is going to be, mainly because the larger a stone is the more difficult it can be to obtain. Smaller stones, on the other hand, are rather plentiful in comparison, pulling a lower per carat price. Essentially, a two carat solitaire ring will run significantly higher in price than a ring bearing a one carat centre stone with two half carat side stones. Even though the overall carat weight is the same, the prices are vastly different.

Defining History-The Diamond Ring & The Wedding Dress

27 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Over the years, many wedding traditions have changed, evolved, and eventually returned to their roots, only to change again. One of the two most recognized traditions today, however, are also two of the traditions that have seemed to change the most over the years, the bridal diamond ring and the wedding dress.

According to historical records, the very first engagement ring, that also happened to be a diamond ring, was presented to Mary of Burgundy by her betrothed, Archduke Maximilian of Austria. This diamond ring was given in 1477 and, since Mary wed the Archduke within 24 hours of receiving the ring, it officially began the tradition of presenting an item of jewellery, specifically a ring, to symbolize one’s intention to marry. The fact that Mary’s ring held a diamond, however, was not a tradition that remained constant. As diamonds were extremely scarce and costly, they were typically only owned by royalty and upper class. Over the years, various gems passed in and out of popularity for use in engagement rings, including rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. It is only because of a clever marketing campaign, conducted by a major jewellery company, that diamonds became associate so closely with romance and love. Once this connecting had been made, the tradition of presenting a diamond ring upon proposal once again became the custom.

The wedding dress, on the other hand, has a fairly consistent history, although the styles and colour preferences have changed over the years. The most traditional form of bridal apparel is the pure white wedding dress. Often made from lace, satin, chiffon, silks, or other delicate fabrics, wedding dresses can be elegant, classy, whimsical, flirty, and everything in between.

The tradition of the white wedding dress began in 1840 when Queen Victoria married Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Her white wedding gown began the traditional that is still held onto tightly today. In 1849, Godey’s Lady’s Book was published and helped to cement the tradition of the white gown even further by defining white as “the most fitting hue” and going on to describe it as an ‘emblem of purity”. Today’s wedding dresses can be short and sexy, long and elegant, simple and chic, or even finely tailored and sophisticated. While there are several exceptions to the white dress rule, most commonly seen in off white gowns originally designed for second marriages or bolder coloured gowns designed for brides wanting to make a very unique statement, the majority of wedding dresses sold today are still in the traditional white tone.

The wedding dress and the diamond engagement ring are the two most common items associated with the the idea of a traditional wedding ceremony and will most likely remain as so for years to come.

Diamond Rings Still Make The Perfect Gift Even After Mother’s Day

26 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Whether you are buying a diamond ring for your mother, your girlfriend, your wife, or your daughter, there is no reason the giving of such a gift should be tied to any specific occasion or event. In fact, some of the most thoughtful gifts are the ones that are given ‘just because’. While some women in your closest circle may expect diamonds on particular dates, such as Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, surprising them with a diamond ring outside of the normal gift giving periods can be even more magical.

If you’re buying a diamond ring for your daughter, her sixteenth birthday or graduation is the typical time associated with the gift. What if you used the fact that she obtained her driver’s license as a non-traditional time to present her with a diamond ring. Have it hanging from a ribbon on the rear view mirror when she gets in the car to drive for the first time. You may want to hold off on the first drive though until she has had time to compose herself.

If you’re buying a ring for your wife and have kids, give her the ring on Father’s Day. This may not make a while lot of sense but you can tell her that having her in your life helps to make you a better father and husband so you feel the day should be just as important to her as it is to you.

For a girlfriend, take a visit to the first restaurant you ate out, the first park you met at, or any other special place you both share. While the specific date need not be important, pick a location that is meaningful. This will not only show her that you remember how special the place is to you, but also that presenting her a diamond ring at that place will make it all the more treasures later on in life.

The Beauty Of Vintage Inspired Chandelier Diamond Earrings

26 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Now, more than ever, the demand for vintage and estate diamond jewellery, particularly diamond earrings, is stronger than ever. While there is still a large market for ultra modern diamond jewellery, the look of antique pieces, with their unique designs and intricate details, is a booming business. Unfortunately for many consumers who prefer that old world charm, since true vintage pieces are limited in quantity, they can also fetch exorbitant prices in the marketplace. Because of this, in an effort to make the vintage and estate look available to everyone, many diamond jewellery designers are focusing more and more on vintage inspired designs. While modern antiqued rings have been popular for some time now, often giving the feel of a family heirloom piece, it is the diamond earring market that is currently seeing an influx of less than modern design trends flooding in.

One of the most popular types of vintage inspired diamond earrings are the chandelier designs. Those who could afford diamond jewellery back in the day often wanted pieces that were generously set with diamonds. Unlike diamond studs or hoops, chandelier diamond earrings provided the opportunity to have multiples stones set in each piece, creating the fire and sparkle within an intricate, yet delicate, design that would catch anyone’s eye. The less fortunate, however, were still able to take advantage of the chandelier design, particularly because of the illusion they were able to create. Using a small number of pave stones, or small diamond accents, the earrings could be made to appear as through they were set with a much larger number of stones from a distance. This was done primarily with the proper combination of the very affordable pave diamonds along with the way the gold was cut to provide a high gloss surface that was often mistaken for a small diamond from far away.

On the modern front, both styles of these vintage inspired chandelier diamond earrings are available. They can be found with a multitude of diamonds, both large and small, or simply a few diamond accents that allow them to give off just the right amount of sparkle.

What To Do With Old Diamond Earrings

26 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Every lady has them……one or more pairs of diamond earrings that have either gone out of style or simply worn out their charm. Because they are diamonds, however, we keep them tucked away in the corner of the jewellery box, too expensive to get rid of yet not interesting enough to wear any more. What many women don’t realize though is there can be a use for those old diamond earrings after all.

One of the simplest things to do with old earrings is have them reset. If your diamonds are set in yellow gold and you have developed a taste for white gold over the years, a new white gold setting may be just the thing to bring your earrings back into fashion.

If you are particularly fond of the stones in the diamond earrings, but not necessarily the fact that they are set in earrings, use them to create a new custom diamond ring. As popular as cluster rings and diamond rings with should stones are these days, the loose diamonds pulled from your old earrings can make a new diamond ring more affordable than you might have imagined.

If the earrings are outdated or have a particular style to them that just isn’t in fashion any more, hold onto them. While this may seem contradictory to finding something useful to do with them, we all know that everything comes back into style eventually. Usually when it does, it comes back in at twice the price. Once your trendy diamond earrings circulate back into style, you won’t need to pay double the cost to be on the cutting edge again.

You can always consider passing them down to a daughter or niece if you want them to become an heirloom piece. While the diamond earrings may no longer be attractive to you, they may be a wonderful and unexpected treat for someone else.

If all else fails, trade them up or trade them in. Many jewellers will take your old jewellery and put a significant portion of its retail value towards a new piece. If your earrings are high value items, you may be able to trade them in for something that will better suit your current tastes, such as a new diamond ring or necklace. If you still like diamond earrings, use the value of your current pair towards a nicer pair in a more elaborate setting or with a larger total carat weight.

Guide To Princess Cut Rings

25 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The princess cut ring has had a long standing career as the second most popular cut for diamond engagement rings.  The cut itself used for princess cut rings was perfected nearly thirty years ago and combines the brilliance of a round brilliant cut stone with the unique symmetry of an emerald cut.  Since then, the stunning square stones of princess cut rings have revolutionized the jewellery market.  Aside from just their appearance, princess cut rings also offer several benefits on a technical level as well.

One of the most important benefits of selecting a princess cut ring is the fact that the stone itself was created using up to eighty percent of the original rough diamond.  For round and oval cut rings, an average of fifty percent of the rough diamond is cut away to create the finished stone.  For example, a ten carat rough diamond cut for a princess cut ring would yield an eight carat finished stone.  A round cut ring created from the same size rough diamond would yield a five carat stone.  This not only allows for a lower per carat price, as well as a larger potential finished stone.

Interestingly enough, the American Gem Society released a set of standards for princess cut rings in 2005, making the princess cut the very first fancy cut diamond to receive rating credentials.  The new rating scale, however, called for a much higher waste percentage from the rough stone, decreasing the average size of a princess cut ring made from a ten carat rough stone from eight carats to as low as six carats.  Because of this fact, even today, most diamond cutters and jewellers continue to finish the diamonds the same way they did in the past, opting for larger stones with less waste than a princess cut ring with accompanying cut rating.

Visually, princess cut rings present an air of royalty.  The princess cut ring is the ideal type for use with three stone ring and eternity ring designs.  Princess cut rings, particularly engagement rings, are also most common bearing 76 facets and utilizing a prong type setting.  This is typically found in solitaire engagement rings utilizing the basic design of a princess cut ring.

Best Emerald Cut Ring Designs

25 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

When purchasing a new diamond ring, it is best to decide on either which cut of stone you want or which type of design you are looking for.  Since these factors aren’t always exactly interchangeable, selecting your preference in one may help narrow down your choices in the other, making the purchase process much simpler.  If you are on the market for an emerald cut ring, for example, there are certain ring types that are more suited to the stone shape than others and should be considered first.

One of the most popular settings for an emerald cut ring is a solitaire design.  One of the noted qualities of emerald cut rings is their ability to cater to nearly any size stone, particularly those with carat weights in the double digits.  A solitaire setting is also ideal because it often allows the stone to be slightly raised above the band of the ring, increasing the amount of light passing through the stone and increasing it’s overall brilliance.  Emerald cut rings also work well with solitaire settings because of the fact that the emerald cut itself works extremely well as a stand alone stone.  It offers an air of elegance and is frequently associated with royalty, due primarily to the larger number of emerald cut rings in crown jewel collections around the globe.

Emerald cut rings are also well suited to three stone ring designs.  One of the key qualities that makes  a three stone ring so beautiful is the inclusion of various shaped stones that are able to lie flush up against one another, primarily emerald and princess cuts.  The seamless points where the centre stone and side stones meet create a stunning visual appearance.  Having the stones side by side in an emerald cut ring also allows the stones to reflect and refract light off one another, further adding to the diamonds’ fire and sparkle.

The final setting type best suited for emerald cut rings is the eternity ring design.  Relying heavily on the same principles as the three stone ring with regards to the benefits of a flush setting, an emerald cut eternity ring is one of the most beautiful examples you can find of the maximum potential of the emerald cut itself.  While the three stone emerald cut ring design offers a beautiful symmetry between the stones, an eternity ring uses identical sized stones completely around the band to create an unending row of diamonds.  Since there are no seams between each stone set into the eternity design emerald cut ring, it gives the appearance of one solid curving diamonds stretching the entire circumference of the band

Solitaire Engagement Ring Settings

25 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Of all the various types of engagement rings on the market, the solitaire engagement ring is possibly the most versatile.  It can not only hold nearly any size or shape of diamond, it is also the easiest style of ring to customize with a variety of individual details.  If you are on the market for a solitaire engagement ring, you should look carefully at the variety of different setting types available for this particular diamond ring style.

The prong setting is probably the most popular and common choice for a solitaire engagement ring.  Typically consisting of four or more prongs, each extends upwards from the ring band and folds slightly over the top surface of the stone to hold it in place.  The prong set solitaire engagement ring became the most common setting style because it allows the stone to be raised above the ring, increasing the amount of light that can pass into the stone from underneath and further magnifying it’s brilliance.

The bezel set solitaire engagement ring is preferred by active women who don’t like how often a prong set stone can potentially snag on things and interfere with their daily routines.  A bezel set stone is set into the precious metal band, making the ring slightly thicker on top and wider across, but also creating a flush surface, eliminating the potential for snagging.  This ease of maintenance is essential for women on the go who want to look beautiful without the hassle often associated with certain types of jewellery.

The tension set solitaire engagement ring is one of the more modern designs that is quickly taking over the bridal jewellery market.  The band itself is split at one point and then slightly stretched apart.  The diamond is then set in between the splits and the tension on the band is released, holding the diamond in a firm grip.  This setting style for solitaire engagement rings not only allows light to pass through the underside of the stone, as in a prong set solitaire engagement ring, it also allows the top side of the ring to be flush, as in a bezel set engagement ring, offering the best of both worlds.  A tension set solitaire engagement ring also offers a unique visual appeal with a very well defined modern edge.

Are Your Diamond Rings Gathering Dust?

25 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

We’ve already discussed what you can do to bring your old diamond earrings back into favour, but there are more than their fair share of diamond rings sitting untouched in jewellery boxes everywhere as well. Just like the diamond earrings, the rings are either too costly or too sentimental to get rid of but not in style or in condition to be worn. Aside from the obvious solution of selling the ring and taking the cash, there are a number of other ways to make use of the diamond ring.

If the ring is an antique that has been in the family for a while, that doesn’t necessarily means it has to sit and gather dust. Many people tend not to wear heirloom pieces due to the fact that some jewellery items made back in the day were more fragile than pieces being produced today. If that is the case, there are a number of jewellers who would be able to either reinforce the setting on the ring to ensure the diamond is secure or recreate the setting using modern techniques. Both options not only make use of the diamond in the ring, they also retain the sentiment behind the piece as well. If you plan to continue to pass the piece down to future generations, either option also ensures it will remain in good shape for years to come.

Even if a diamond ring is not an heirloom piece, it may still have a significant amount of sentiment attached to it. If your budget was limited when you first wed and resulted in a smaller stone for your engagement ring, now may be the time to up-scale. The smaller stone can be used as a should stone and a larger centre diamond can be chosen.

If you are not interested in trading the ring in completely in exchange for a new piece, consider using the stone from the old ring to set into a new one. If the ring is a diamond solitaire, setting it into a new band surrounded by shoulder stones could give the diamond a completely new life. For smaller stones, consider having them set into an eternity ring. Any reputable jeweller will be able to properly match newer diamonds to your older ones to ensure a coherent visual appearance.

Emerald & Diamond Rings For May Babies

25 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

For all you May babies out there or those of you whose beloved way born in May, consider the beauty of the May birthstone combined with the luxury of a diamond ring. Emeralds, the official birthstone of May, are not only rich in their dark green hues, they are also rich in history and tradition as well.

Dating back to early Egyptian times, emeralds were not necessarily rare at the time, but they were extremely dangerous to mine. Often surrounded by vast deserts plagued by deadly scorpions and other creatures, the natives of the land braved the heat to bring home this rich and royal jewel. Known to be one of the most beloved gemstones of Cleopatra herself, the emerald has carried with it it’s royal heritage even through modern times.

When Spain conquered the lands in the early sixteenth century, one of the first treasures they fought to acquire were the large and luxurious emeralds commonly worn among the people. The largest emerald mine in the world is the Muzo mine of Colombia. Beautiful specimens of emeralds can also be found in various other regions, including Russia, Brazil, Madagascar, and Pakistan.

Contrary to certain other gemstones, most emeralds tend to have a slightly milky quality to them. While clearer stones are more expensive, they are also very rare. Because of this, most emeralds on the retail market tend to have a light cloudy appearance. This often provides a unique contrast when set against a clearer gemstone, such as a diamond. The emerald and diamond ring combination also works well in either colour of gold. Yellow gold provides a rich contrast to the green hue of the emerald, while white gold further illuminates the diamonds.

Emeralds are believed to signify patience and wisdom, two very important qualities in a relationship. Diamonds signify eternal love, another key to a long and happy life together. When paired together in an emerald and diamond ring, these two stones combine to offer the perfect harmony and balance in love. Because of this, emeralds are also common gifts for anniversaries.

Diamond Earrings Returning To The Spotlight

25 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

More and more celebrities are being spotted on the red carpet and elsewhere proudly displaying some of the most elegant and dazzling examples of diamond earrings the market has ever seen. Where once it was flashy diamond rings and bejeweled necklaces that caught everyone’s eye, diamond earrings are, once again, beginning to take centre stage. The perfect accessory for so many reasons, diamond earrings are hot right now and what better way to celebrate this trend than buying a nice shiny new pair for yourself.

Sandra Bullock wowed us at the Oscars earlier this year with her luxurious drop diamond earrings. Elegant and sophisticated, she knew that the sparkle and shine they provided was all she needed to bring out her natural beauty. More recently, legendary singer Beyoncé dazzled everyone at the recent US president Barack Obama’s state dinner. There to perform for the reception in honour of the president and first lady of Mexico, Beyoncé’s elaborate, and we assume exceedingly costly, diamond chandelier earrings caught everybody’s eye. She did choose to pair them with a matching diamond studded dress, but the rest of us can settle for something a little less daring. After all, nothing sets off a little black dress more than a beautiful pair of diamond earrings.

While chandelier and drop diamond earrings are at the top of the fashion trend right now, diamond solitaire earrings and diamond hoop earrings are quickly gaining in popularity as well. With their simple elegance, many women are even choosing to wear multiple pairs of diamond solitaire earrings, dropping in size from small to large down the ear to take advantage of the multiple piercing trend. While this practice was once considered taboo, it has grown more socially accepted over the years. By adorning these multiple piercings with beautiful diamonds, the focus will be n the jewels, not the piercings themselves. Even with a single piercing, diamond earrings are the perfect accessory for day to night transitions. They are a timeless piece, accentuating a woman’s face, especially the glimmer in her eyes. After all, unlike rings or necklaces, diamond earrings are known for drawing attention upwards on a woman, exactly where she wants the attention to be.

Famous Emerald Cut Rings Throughout History

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The emerald cut ring is believed to be one of the most elegant examples of fine jewellery on the market.  Dating back to early Egyptian times, the cut of the stone itself was taken directly from the cut used for, you guessed it, early emerald jewellery.  Many believe the emerald cut ring’s long association with royalty is either a result on the common use of the cut by the kings and queens of Egypt.  Others believe it is the fact that an emerald cut ring is one of the best suited designs for holding stones greater than 10 carats.  Regardless of which theory you choose to believe, there are numerous examples of world famous emerald cut rings throughout history.

One of the most popular emerald cut rings is the one Prince Charles presented to Camilla Parker Bowles when he asked her to become his wife.  This particular emerald cut ring featured a stunning emerald cut diamond flanked on either side by smaller baguette accent stones.

When it comes to sheer size, the Darya-i Noor emerald is said to be between 170 and 200 carats.  The stone was last technical examined and given its carat weight estimate by expert jeweller Jean Baptiste Tavernier around 1650.  While its size may preclude it from ever being set into an emerald cut ring, it still serves as one of the greatest masterpieces in the Crown Jewels of Iran.

On a slightly smaller scale, but still large enough to make a stunningly massive emerald cut ring, the Jonker emerald once belonged to child actress and Hollywood sweetheart Shirley Temple.  The 125 carat stone has since passed into the hands of a private collector.

The Mouwad Magic emerald weighs in at just under 110 carats, making for a hefty but beautiful emerald cut ring.  It is currently housed in Lebanon in the collection of Robert Mouwad, the jeweller for whom the stone was named.

More emerald cut ring examples include the Porter Rhodes diamond, a 55 carat emerald cut ring belonging to prominent London jeweller Laurence Graff.  This diamonds history includes the fact that it was one of the very first large scale diamonds retrieved from the South African Kimberley mine in the late 1800s.  Going back up on the scale, the Portuguese daimond weighs in at just over 127 carats and resides in the Smithsonian Institution for public viewing.  This stone was once the prized possession of Peggy Hopkins from the Ziegfield Follies.

The Beauty Of White Gold Wedding Rings

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

For many years, yellow gold was the metal of choice for the majority of the high end jewellery on the market.  Eventually, white gold became a major player, later followed by platinum.  Now, the selection process for buying the perfect set of wedding rings can be extremely trying if you’re not sure exactly what you’re looking for, or even know what you’re looking at.  By examining the benefits of white gold wedding rings, however, you may soon see why they are your best bet in bridal jewellery.

There are three primary silver toned precious metals, silver itself, white gold, and platinum.

With reagrds to durability, silver is the weakest of the three, while white gold is the strongest. Silver rings tarnish easily, while white gold wedding rings only need an occasional cleaning and possible refinishing every few years.  Platinum, of the three is the easiest to maintain, however, its finish will likely change colours over the years, going from a bright silver to a matte grey.

Platinum is a much denser metal than either white gold or silver, making it much heavier as well.  White gold weddings rings, therefore are much lighter and more comfortable to wear than a platinum set.  The lighter nature of white gold wedding rings also makes it less likely to snap, as broken prongs can sometimes be a common occurrence with a metal as dense as platinum.

With reagrds to exterior finishes, the differences between platinum and white gold wedding rings may not always be noticeable unless they are side by side.  In that case, the white gold wedding rings will tend to have a more silver finish to them, while the platinum takes on more of a grey appearance.  For those who prefer different finishes, however, white gold wedding rings are available in a variety of concentrations, including 14k gold and 18k gold, offering some variety when to comes to the overall colour of the ring.

While, in some cases, platinum may seem like the better of the three metals, there is a downside.  Unlike white gold wedding rings, platinum rings come with a much heftier price tag attached to them.  This feature alone makes many couples more likely to choose white gold wedding rings fo their bridal jewellery collections.

History Of The Emerald Cut Ring

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Even though round and princess cut diamond rings are the most popular on the market, the emerald cut ring has an extremely rich history and many benefits associated with it as well.

The emerald cut ring has long been valued for its elegant and sophisticated appearance.  The cut itself is believed to date back to early Egyptian times when actual emeralds were highly prized as one of the great royal jewels.  The oblong rectangular cut was preferred for emeralds since it tended to better emphasise the brilliance and sparkle of the stone itself.  As this style of cutting the stones grew more popular, any gemstone cut in this oblong fashion was labelled as an emerald cut.  Eventually, diamonds became the gem of choice to carry the tradition of the emerald cut ring forward.  To this day, however, emerald cut rings remain extremely popular for nearly all gemstones, including emeralds themselves.

The value of an emerald cut ring can be attributed to several factors.  For one, the way the stone is cut for an emerald cut ring is extremely efficient.  Both emerald and princess cut stones are beloved by jewellers because they allow the person cutting the stone to utilize up to 80% of the rough diamond.  This is a significant increase when compared to the average percentage of the rough diamond when cutting a rounder stone, sometimes as low as 50%.  The stone for an emerald cut ring is also much easier to cut, as there more facets or edges involved in other cuts of diamonds, each greatly increasing the labour time involved with producing a finished stone.  The lower number of facets also allows each facet in an emerald cut ring to be more distinct, often creating drastic flashes of light instead of the more subtle sparkle created by other cuts.

Most importantly, an emerald cut ring is considered one of the finer styles because of its ability to handle larger diamonds, particularly those over 10 carats in size.  This further lends to the emerald cut ring’s association with wealth and luxury.  Even with more modest stones, however, the emerald cut ring remains a thing of beauty and sophistication.

Benefits Of A Solitaire Engagement Ring

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

While the appearance of the solitaire engagement ring might be the most common style people are familiar with, there are a wealth of other designs currently on the market that are becoming increasingly popular for engagement rings as well.  These include cluster rings, three stone rings, and even eternity rings.  There are, however, several reasons why selecting a solitaire engagement ring may still be your best bet.

The solitaire engagement ring is timeless in it’s appearance.  It is the most traditional design, and will most likely remain so for a long time to come.  The design itself is simple enough to match with any personality, any time period, or any budget.  A solitaire engagement ring has a classic look that never becomes outdated or goes out of style.  While the other designs available may seem trendy now, not all of them will be able to weather the test of time like the solitaire engagement ring has done.

The second benefit of choosing a solitaire engagement ring is their versatility.  While it may seem like you have more design options going with a more complex ring design, keep in mind that the solitaire engagement ring offers the ability to use any size of stone, in any shape, with any precious metal.  Eternity rings and three stone diamond rings, for example, are often restricted to princess or emerald cut diamonds.   Cluster rings are typically designed to hold smaller centre stones.  Solitaire engagement rings, on the other hand, are literally unlimited in the diamond options it will work with, making it the most versatile of all engagement ring designs.  Even though you’re setting options may seem limited, a solitaire engagement ring is also able to accommodate a range of options, including tension settings, bezel settings, and more.

A solitaire engagement ring can also be one of the most affordable options when it comes to bridal jewellery.  Since the stone size a solitaire engagement ring can hold is completely variable, allowing small stones to work just as well as larger ones.  Solitaire engagement rings also tend to use a significantly lower amount of precious metals, further reducing the overall cost of this style of ring.  The cost is also eliminated for accent stones and other accentuations that are typically found in other engagement ring styles.

History Of Eternity Rings

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

While many people believe that eternity rings are a fairly modern concept, they can actually be traced as far back in history as 2000 B.C.  The early Egyptians, in fact, are thought to be the first civilised peoples to use the eternity ring design.  Granted, their eternity rings were not platinum and set with diamonds, but they were very beautiful in their appearance none the less.  Early examples of eternity rings from this time reveal bands of various metals set with an array of gemstones across the top half of the ring.  At the time, diamonds weren’t very popular as the Egyptians preferred the rich colours of emeralds, sapphires, rubies, and other semi-precious gems.  For an added touch, the band itself was also designed to resemble a serpent consuming it’s own tail, a common Egyptian visual representation of eternity.

In later years, diamonds did become increasingly popular, valued for their rarity and beauty, despite their lack of colour.  They quickly became the gem of choice for eternity rings and have remained so ever since.  The standard metals for eternity rings are currently yellow gold, white gold, and platinum.  Some eternity rings also feature a combination of both white and yellow gold, providing a beautiful contrast to one another.

Eventually, the meaning behind the eternity ring became more globally accepted as well.  The primary role of an eternity ring is to act as a symbol for the unending love one half of a couple has for the other.  It is a common, almost mandatory, anniversary gift.  While eternity rings were once received for 50th and 60th anniversaries only, they are now a common 1st year anniversary gift.

The secondary use for an eternity ring was to celebrate the birth or adoption of a child.  Again, the ring symbolized eternal love, only this time is was between a mother and her child.  These eternity rings sometimes featured accent stones along with the diamonds, representation the child’s birthstone, the mother’s birthstone, or a combination of both.

So while the component materials of the eternity ring may have changed over the years, the basic design and symbolism behind the ring have remained constant throughout time.

The Evolution Of The Blood Diamond

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

While most consumers focus on details such as the cut and carat weight of the stone in a diamond ring as part of their decision making process, there is more than just the basic Four C’s to consider these days before making a purchase. If you are not familiar with the concept of a blood diamond, it is a key factor to understand before your next diamond purchase.

While most countries finance their military activities through various taxes, others areas have chosen to go another route, relying on the suffering of others to provide funds for their ongoing bloodshed. In various regions of the world, acts of war are being financed by the blood diamond trade. Also known as a conflict diamond or war diamond, a blood diamond is, in essence, any diamond used to finance war, insurgency and terrorist activities. These stones are typically mined by forceful means by the poorer residents of the areas being forced into slavery to produce the supply of diamonds from the mines. While Africa has long been the most abundant source of blood diamonds, they can come form anywhere in the world. In order to decrease the ability for warlord ruled areas to use forcibly mined diamonds to finance their activities, a joint effort between various parties involved in the diamond industry produced the Kimberley Process. This certification program, in force since 2002, was the collaborative effort of diamond miners, government agencies, and diamond distributors. It created what was essentially a chain of custody for all diamonds entering the retail market. While there are still groups able to get uncertified diamonds onto the market, the number of conflict diamonds has decreased significantly since the Kimberley Process was put in place. One of the best ways to ensure you are doing your part to further reduce the ability for unsanctioned groups to profit off the sale of blood diamonds is to verify you are purchasing your diamond from a reputable dealer, such as Purely Diamonds, known for their wide selection of exclusively conflict free diamonds.

Examining The Beauty Of The Three Stone Diamond Ring

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

When most people think of three stone diamond rings, they think of the ‘past, present, and future’ marketing campaign the De Beer’s company conducted several years ago. Aside from just being a representation of the three stages in a couple’s relationship, a three stone diamond ring can be used for a variety of other reasons and occasions.

While the traditional engagement ring has typically been a solitaire diamond, the tradition has given way to a variety of other trends over the years, including three stone engagement rings. The stones can still represent the three stages of the relationship, but it can also serve a very practical purpose. While larger diamonds are more expensive per carat than smaller ones, a three stone diamond ring can potentially allow you to significantly increase the total carat weight of an engagement ring, without as large a price jump as the one you would have from buying the same carat size in a solitaire stone. The three stone option also contributes a significantly larger amount of sparkle and fire to a diamond ring, extending the beauty beyond just the centre stone.

A three stone ring is also the ideal way to buy a diamond ring that makes more of a statement than a solitaire ring, without necessarily being too over the top. While past trends have leaned towards massive diamonds and extravagant settings, the tides are turning back to more sophisticated pieces, conveying a sense of class and style. The three stone ring is the perfect way to wear multiple diamonds in a single ring without giving the appearance of the ring being too bold. Three stone rings are also perfectly acceptable for the workplace, simple enough to remain professional, but with just enough sparkle to get noticed.

The three stone rings, however, still remain very popular for their original intention as an anniversary gift. While couples are now being encouraged to use a three stone ring to celebrate their first year of marriage, the simplicity and beauty of a three stone ring is perfect for any milestone.

The History Of The Diamond Tennis Bracelet

23 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Prior to 1987, a row of diamonds set in a bracelet was called an in-line diamond bracelet. Today, we refer to it as a tennis bracelet, but how many people have ever stopped to wonder why or how this beautiful diamond bracelet got its seemingly unrelated name.

At the 1987 U.S. Open, a national tennis championship event, jewellery history was made at this most unlikely of events. Chris Evert, previously ranked the top female tennis player in the world, was competing in a tennis match when she realized her bracelet had fallen off. The bracelet was a diamond bracelet, set with multiple diamonds in a row or line across the bracelet. It had been specially made for her by celebrity jeweller George Bedewi. In a surprise ruling, the judge allowed the match to be stopped momentarily so Ms. Evert could collect her beloved diamond bracelet from the court and move it to safety. Since that day, any in-line diamond bracelet has been referred to as a tennis bracelet.

Today, diamond tennis bracelets are not only worn by major tennis stars such as Serena Williams, they can be enjoyed by women around the globe, regardless of the athletic inclinations. If you’re looking for something to break away from the traditional gift of a diamond ring or necklace, a bracelet may be the perfect answer. Diamond tennis bracelets can be found in a variety of gold and platinum settings with diamonds of nearly any shape or size imaginable.

Diamond Rings-How Are They Made? (The Birth Of A Diamond)

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Almost everyone enjoys and appreciates the beauty of a diamond ring, especially when it is on their finger and not someone else’s. What most consumers don’t realize, however, is the intensive process behind creating that diamond ring. From their creation deep below the earth’s surface, to the mining process and the workers involved, into the hand of the skilled jewellers who turn the rough stones into masterpieces, and onto the retail market, the journey from the earth to your finger that a diamond takes is truly an astonishing one.

Carbon is a basic element found in pencil lead, batteries, cloth fiber, and types of steel, just to name a few things. While these items may not seem elegant and luxurious, they are all created with the same basic element that, under the right circumstances, produces of the most respected gemstones known to man, the diamond. As carbon deposits sit deep within the earth’s crust, they are subjected to extreme amounts of pressure and heat.

Over a hundred feet below where some of use are standing, there are deposits of carbon. The weight and amount of pressure that this hundred feet of ground creates is immense. The temperature around these carbon deposits can reach up to 1400 degrees Celsius. As the carbon element is subjected to these conditions, the carbon is heated and compressed a number of times until it becomes a rough diamond. While white diamonds are the most common, when other elements such as nitrogen and sulfur are present, the diamonds can take on a variety of colours, making them even more valuable and rare. Some of the rarest colours are true red and true blue diamonds, but other colours such as green, champagne, yellow, and orange can be found as well. In general, the larger the deposit of carbon is, the more likely a larger rough stone will be formed. Because of the unique circumstances required to form coloured diamonds, larger rough coloured diamonds are exceedingly rarer that their sister colourless stones.

Once these rough stones have formed, they sit and wait to be found when they will continue onto the next step of their wonderful journey.

Diamond Rings-How Are They Made? (Mining The Precious Gem)

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Next time you glance down at the diamond ring on your finger, take a moment to appreciate all the labour that went into making it the beautiful piece of jewellery that you treasure so much. After all, once a diamond is created within the earth, they don’t just magically float up to the surface. Diamonds have to be mined and the mining process is anything but simple.

For the most part, there are two basic types of diamond mining, alluvial diamond mining and pipe diamond mining. Alluvial mining is the least used method of the two since there are very few places it can be done successfully. It relies on nature to do most of the work for us by focusing on areas where natural erosion has worn away most of the earth’s surface that existed above where the diamonds were created. Alluvial mining takes place on the coastlines of beaches and in riverbeds where water and sand abrasion have gradually worn down the surface of the land to make the diamonds more easily attainable. The water is dammed up and heavy machinery is used to clear the remaining surface area above the stones. Once this level has been reached, the material, rocks, dirt, diamonds, and all, is taken away in large trucks to be sorted elsewhere.

Pipe mining is much more common. It relies on naturally occurring volcanic pipes within the ground that lead deep into the surface. The pipes are reinforced with a series of shanks and massive drills are used to tunnel into the area surrounding the base of the pipelines to access the diamonds below. As the tunnels are created, the enormous rocks being removed to create them are removed and taken off site to be broken down in search of the diamonds contained within them. Pipe mining, although it is more common, is also more dangerous due to the general nature of the process. It is, however, still heavily relied upon despite the risks because of the significant size of the stones that can be obtained as opposed to the ones garnered from alluvial mining.

Diamond Rings-How Are They Made? (The Men Behind The Mines)

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Not only should consumes appreciate the mining process itself when admiring their beloved diamond ring, they should also give thanks to the men and women who spend their days working in and around the mines in order to retrieve those precious diamonds from beneath the ground. Within the mining process, several key roles exist that help to ensure the operation runs as smoothly and effectively as possible.

One of the most important roles is played by the miners actually working underground. Not only is this one of the most dangerous jobs to perform, it also tends to exist in some of the harshest working conditions. The underground miners are responsible for breaking the larger rocks within the diamond mine free so that they can be removed and transported to the surface. This is a highly skilled job that does pay well, primarily due to the risks involved, but requires years of training and skill to perform.

The mining technician also plays a key roles in a successful mining operation. This person is the one responsible for determining the best places to drill and tunnel to retrieve the highest possible concentration of diamonds. They work hand in hand with a trained geologist to examine the various mining sites, taking samples of the ground to check for possible diamond deposits, and mapping the best potential areas to drill.

The mining engineer is essentially responsible for overseeing the operation of all the mining equipment at the drilling site. Again, this is another highly skilled role requiring intensive education and training. The engineer is not only accountable for the proper operation of all the equipment, they are also responsible for educating the miners on the safe operation of all the machinery being used.

The underground miners, the mining technician, and the mining engineer are overseen by a mining superintendent. This person is responsible for the day to day operations of the mine, the overall costs associated with the mining process at a specific site, and final approval over mapping and mining locations. Mining superintendents are typically well skilled and have been in the mining business for an extensive period of time. They have also, almost always, worked in the lower ranks in some capacity for a significant amount of time, allowing them a complete understanding of exactly how the mining process works from beginning to end.

Diamond Rings-How Are They Made? (Perfecting The Stone)

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Once the rough stone that will eventually become your diamond ring is mined from below the ground, it still has a long way to go before it can become the polished gem you see before you. Several skilled jewellers are each responsible for various phases in a diamond’s transition from a rough stone to a polished one. The steps below typically take place at various finishing warehouse operated by the distributor that owns the mine the diamonds were harvested from or who has bought the gems directly from the mine owner.

The first step that is taken when a rough stone is received for cutting is called marking. This process involves carefully examining the larger rough stone to determine the best way to cut the various pieces from it in order to obtain the largest cuts with the best quality. Because of the rarity of larger finished stones, the larger rough stones they are cut from can sometimes take several months to mark in order to ensure the best course of action is being made.

Once a stone has been marked, it is then cleaved. Cleaving is essentially the process by which a jeweller uses the reference points created during the marking process to break the rough stone into smaller rough pieces. This step is crucial due to the fact that if the stone is chiselled or cleaved incorrectly, the entire rough gem could be damaged.

Once the smaller stones have been broken free, each stone is sawed and girding. These steps in the process involve making the cuts in the stone and grinding down the surfaces to create the preliminary shape that the stone will eventually be cut to. In essence, these steps create the rough draft of the final stone.

Once the rough cuts have been made, the stone then undergoes the process of blocking. This is possible the most precise step in the entire process since it involves directly creating the individual facets or surfaces that the finished stone will posses. A standard round brilliant cut diamond, for example, contains a total of 57 facets that must each be blocked by hand. Once all the facets have been cut, the stone is polished and is ready to be set.

Diamond Rings-How Are They Made? (Distributing The Goods)

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

For one of the most refined examples of how a gemstone travels from the mine into the setting of your diamond ring, its best to take a look at the distribution practice of the world’s leading supplier of diamonds, DeBeers. Currently owning the largest percentages of the world’s diamond mines, as well as being the leading diamond distributor around the world, DeBeers has the diamond distribution process worked down to a science, precise, controlled, and extremely effective.

Since they own all of their own mines and processing facilities, DeBeers essentially has complete control over their diamonds from start to finish. For the most part, their process of limited distribution practices is believed to be one of the reasons the price and value of diamonds has remained consistently high over the years. By controlling the majority of the global distribution, they are also able to effectively control supply and demand, ensuring that the market never becomes either too flooded with diamonds or that the diamond market never becomes too sparse. This not only makes good business sense, it also keeps the value of diamonds consistent, a great benefit for investors.

Once DeBeers has inspected all of their finished diamonds that have been perfected over a period of time, they offer a hand picked selection of the supply to an exclusive list of buyers. DeBeers hold distribution events for approximately 20 clients on ten preselected days of every year. On each of these days, clients from around the globe gather in London at the DeBeers showcase on the famous Number Two Charterhouse Street. At these events, clients are allowed to view and purchase the portion of diamonds that DeBeers has allowed to be released onto the market. While some of the diamonds are completely cut, polished, and ready to be set, others are sold to cutting houses for further cutting and finishing touches. It is said that the diamonds sold each year by DeBeers to their clients will eventually fetch nearly four times their purchase price by the time they arrive at the marketplace. DeBeers gauges their distribution quantities according to the current diamond supply on the market already.

Diamond Rings-How Are They Made? (Marketing Perfection)

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

When it comes to marketing the latest trends in diamond rings, DeBeers is once again the industry leader. They not only control the majority of the global diamond distribution, they also seem to control the majority of the traditions being associated with certain forms of diamond jewellery over the past several years.

The introduction of diamond marketing began in 1947. Frances Gerety, a novice copywriter working for an advertising agency that the DeBeers corporation would later be eternally grateful to, came up with a rather catchy phrase to help his company sell diamonds. That year gave birth to the phrase that Advertising Age magazine named the ‘Best Advertising Slogan Of The Twentieth Century’. Those simple four words that changed the way diamonds were marketed was “A Diamond Is Forever”. While it was originally intended to signify the long lasting nature of the diamond as a gemstone, it soon took on new meaning as a reference to the eternal nature of love as being represented by diamonds. DeBeers, of course, took this slogan on as their own, creating the link between diamonds and romance that still endures so strongly today.

In later years, the eternity ring began to be marketed as the perfect symbol of eternal love, making it the ideal gift for an anniversary gift or as a gift to be given to symbolize the eternal bond between a mother and child at birth. DeBeers hit another home run marketing the famous ‘Past, Present, And Future’ ring. Nothing more than a three stone ring, De Beers gave it meaning, convincing consumers that it represented the three stages of a relationship, yet another gift perfect for anniversaries. Eventually journey jewellery hot the market, bearing stones that were set in size order from smallest to largest. This collection of rings, necklaces, and earrings were designed to represent a couple’s growing love for each other as their relationship progressed. Recognizing a previously untapped market, DeBeers began focusing on the single, independent woman with their right hand ring or dress diamond ring. Intended to eliminate the stigma of wearing diamond jewellery when single, the dress diamond ring made it acceptable for a woman to celebrate her independence with diamond rings outside of the bridal jewellery category.

As you can see, the jewellery may not always sell itself on the shelves. The marketing campaign behind it, however, can contribute significantly to its popularity.

Hollywood’s Love Affair With Diamond Rings

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Thanks to the latest Sex and the City instalment to hit the big screens, consumers are once again turning to Hollywood for their jewellery inspirations. The stunning 5 carat white gold diamond ring featured in the movie has rocketed itself to the top of many women’s most wanted lists. Designed by Itay Malkin, the ring also features 80 white diamonds encrusted in the band. In response to consumer demand, Malkin will be creating a limited number of replica rings for those wiling to pay the price.

This isn’t the first time, however, that a diamond ring on the silver screen has sparked a trend in real life. The first Legally Blonde film, starring Hollywood sweetheart Reese Witherspoon, a diamond heirloom ring was featured that soon sparked a revival for vintage diamond rings. Ironically enough, she never actually received the ring in the film. The sequel went in a completely different direction, featuring a more unique diamond ring, better suited to her character’s unique personality. The bright pink diamond ring she proudly wore quickly fired up the coloured diamond ring craze in the retail market. Bright colours and fun designs, in particular, became all the rage.

Both 1998’s hit Armageddon and 2001’s The Wedding Planner helped to bring things back down to earth. they both featured very simply and elegant diamond engagement rings being placed on their leading lady’s fingers. Naturally, after the release of each film, the market spiked for the classic diamond rings, often set with solitaire stones in plain gold bands. This was also proof positive that the traditional diamond solitaire engagement ring was truly timeless and would never go out of style.

Just to prove that not everything we see on the big screen is an illusion, Anne Hathaway stunned audiences with her character’s cushion cut Chopard engagement ring. Far from merely a prop, the 3 carat diamond ring was on loan from the jewellery house itself. The Chopard ring, a beautiful example of the unique designs offered by the jewellery house, helped raise consumer demand for custom pieces and non-traditional designs.

Divorce Diamond Rings-The Next Hot Trend

22 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Women preparing for marriage have diamond engagement rings. Those already wed have diamond wedding rings. Single women have right hand rings, also known as dress diamond rings. Now, for the ladies not listed above, we bring you the divorce diamond ring.

Possibly the next hot trend on the jewellery market, the divorce diamond ring is quickly gaining in popularity. One of the issues many women have after they divorce is what to do with their rings. If the marriage was fairly short lived, the rings are often returned to the ex-husband. In longer marriages, however, the woman typically keeps her rings. Many women with children prefer to set them aside for use as an heirloom piece further down the road. Those without children, on the other hand, are often faced with the issue of not really knowing what to do with the constant reminders of their past marriage.

The perfect solution is being discovered in the form of a divorce diamond ring. The original weddings rings themselves may not always hold the best memories, particularly when the marriage ended in divorce. The stones themselves, however, tend be remain fairly neutral in sentiment. Never wanting to waste a perfectly good diamond, many women are beginning to choose to have the stone removed from their bridal jewellery and reset. Even though they are retaining the diamonds from their bridal jewellery, the process of being able to choose a new setting and style of ring tends to be rather cathartic for many women. The divorce diamond ring they create from the old stones doesn’t necessarily symbolize the end of their marriage, as much as it represents the start of a new chapter in their life. Reusing the diamonds also symbolizes the fact that, regardless of how the marriage ended, she will always carry the memories form the happier times with her.

While the concept of the divorce diamond ring may still be a fairly new one, many retailers are quickly catching on to this potentially untapped market. This also proves, yet again, that there really is a suitable diamond ring for just about every occasion.

Wedding Season Is In Full Swing

21 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Wedding season is now in full swing and that means so are diamond ring sales. With the Summer months being the most popular for exchanging vows, the sales of diamond rings and bridal jewellery also tend to hit their peaks sales during these months. This Summer, the weather isn’t the only thing that’s hot, as some interesting new trends in diamond rings seem to be popping up everywhere.

Split Shanks

While many current trends have been seen before and come and go on a regular basis, the split shank design is fairly new this season. The split shank ring not only offer a unique band design for the ring itself, ti also provides a chance to take advantage of some of the more unique stone settings the design is suited to. Starting as a single band at the base of the ring, the design splits in half as it approaches the upper portion. The diamond is typically between the split band design in either a bezel setting or a tension setting. Split shank rings can be bold and designed to accommodate fairly sizable stones, or they can be more modest, leaving room between the bands for a more subdued setting.

Stacking Rings

Another hot trend in the diamond industry right now is stacking rings. Why have one diamond ring when you can have several, right? With eternity like rings becoming popular for use as wedding bands, engagement rings and anything in between, the practice of having multiple diamond eternity rings stacked together on one finger is growing in popularity. For a more unique statement, it is also becoming common to mix and match rings with regards to metals, diamond colours, and stone shapes.

Vintage Diamond Rings

While this may not be a new trend, it remains on the list of hot trends because it has proved to have a staying power that many people never anticipated. Even though the actual vintage jewellery market is limited, the large number of designers focusing on vintage inspired diamond rings continues to grow. The market is also greatly driven by women wishing to recreate heirloom diamond rings that have been passed down in their families for generations using modern design and craftsmanship in order to add a new level of quality to the recreation.

Regardless of which trend you choose to explore, or even if you prefer to be the one making your own trends, the diamond ring market is hotter than ever with a range of beautiful and dazzling creations bound to catch your eye.

Eternity Rings – The History and Traditions

20 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

An eternity ring is designed to be a symbol or token of everlasting love as well as the ‘eternity’ a husband and wife plan to share together. Traditionally presented after a couple has already been married, they can be given as a gift to commemorate and anniversary or to celebrate the birth of the first child.

History of The Eternity Ring

The concept of an eternity ring dates back approximately 4,000 years to Egyptian times. While the Egyptians didn’t necessarily use the rings to commemorate a specific occasion, they were said to have used them simply as a token eternal love and life. Early examples found were simply a circle of metal, precious or otherwise, set with stones either on the top half of the ring or running the entire circumference of the ring. Some early examples of eternity rings were also designed to mimic the image of a snake devouring its own tail, a common symbol used to represent eternity.

Modern Traditions

Unlike the early intentions of eternity rings, today they are usually given to specifically mark a particular anniversary. The concept of giving an eternity ring to celebrate a milestone in a marriage signifies not only the time you have already spent together, but the unending future you plan to share with your spouse. Another meaning of the ring is used to represent the eternal circle of life. Because of this, an eternity ring is often given to a wife by her husband after their first child is born. Many wedding bands are being created with stones set into them. These do not, however, carry the same significance as an eternity ring presented after a marriage or childbirth.

What Anniversary Should They Celebrate

If you follow the traditional list of proper anniversary gifts, as outdated as it may seem, gemstones were not meant to be given until the fortieth anniversary and, even then, it was only supposed to be rubies, not diamonds, the traditional stone in an eternity ring. So, for couples who insist on sticking to tradition, the diamond eternity would would be appropriate for your sixtieth anniversary, when diamonds were considered an appropriate gift. On a side not, good luck getting your wife to stick around for 60 years after you’ve given her a piece of wood for your fifth anniversary followed by a piece of tin or aluminum to commemorate ten years of marriage.

For those couples who prefer to follow the more modern list of recommended anniversary gifts, a diamond can be given on the tenth anniversary and would signify the appropriate time to present your wife with a traditional diamond set eternity ring. However, if you prefer to follow the advice given by DeBeer’s, the current jeweler corporation who also happens to be the controller of almost 80% of the world’s diamond supply, a diamond eternity ring is perfectly suited to celebrate a one year anniversary together.

Regardless of which tradition you choose to follow, the presenting of an eternity ring to signify a wedding anniversary should be your personal choice and not driven by any preset list of proper gifts or creative corporate marketing campaign.

The Circle of Life

Only in recent years did the original symbolism of the eternity ring as a representation of the circle of life resurface. Because of this, the welcoming of a couple’s first child into the world became another tradition in which the gift of an eternity ring was deemed appropriate. With adoption as popular as it is today, especially for couples who cannot have children of their own, the gift of an eternity ring is just as appropriate as well.

In essence, the ring can either be used to celebrate the time you have spent together in marriage or the time at which your life as a family truly began. Either way, an eternity ring can be just as meaningful as an engagement ring and just as momentous as a wedding band. This is also the reason why so many people choose to wear all three rings together, whether on the same finger or split between both ring fingers.

The Impact Of Diamond Rings On Bridal Jewellery (Anniversaries & Milestones)

20 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Aside from their influence on engagement rings and wedding bands, diamond rings are also a common representation of wedding anniversaries and other marital or relationship milestones a couple can share together.
Eternity Rings

While the concept of diamond eternity ringsmay not be a new one, their emergence as an integral part of bridal jewellery seems to be fairly recent. The eternity ring itself was designed to represent eternal love and was often given as an anniversary gift or to celebrate the birth of the couple’s first child. Still biding by tradition, the eternity ring is a common anniversary present. Similar to diamond ring enhancers, when an eternity ring is given as an anniversary present, some women choose to wear their eternity ring in place of their wedding band. It is perfectly acceptable, however, to wear your engagement ring, wedding band, and eternity ring together.

When given to celebrate a milestone, such as the birth of the couple’s first child, the diamond eternity ring can also be set with a combination of diamonds and both the mother’s and the child’s birthstone gem. In families with multiple children, a diamond eternity ring can be custom made that includes the mother’s birthstone as well as those of each child.

The Three Stone Diamond Ring

What better way to celebrate your love for your spouse than with a diamond ring symbolizing the past that brought your together, the present that it has led you to, and the future you look forward to sharing together. Of course, when it comes to jewellery, is there any better way to symbolize love than with a diamond? The three stone diamond ring has been a solid trend for some time now. While most three stone engagement rings that contain shoulder stones have a large centre stone and two significantly smaller side stones, the side stones on a three stone rings are only slightly smaller than the centre stone. Three stone diamond rings are typically given as a token of love to celebrate a wedding anniversary. There are some couples, however, who choose a three stone ring to either use as an engagement ring, or to serve as both their engagement ring and wedding band. This is often preferred by women who prefer to only wear a single ring, as opposed to a two or three piece set.

Diamond rings, in their various forms, have not only impacted bridal jewellery tremendously over the years, they have become an integral part of nearly every form of bridal and anniversary jewellery on the market.

Maximizing The Beauty Of Eternity Rings With Platinum

20 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

One of the biggest choices to make when it comes to selecting a new eternity ring is which precious metal to have the band cast from. While yellow gold eternity rings are available, white metal are, by far, the more popular colour choices. These may include white gold, palladium, or platinum. For many reasons, platinum seems to be the metal of choice for the largest percentage of consumers.

Purity

An eternity ring is designed to symbolize the unending love between either a husband and wife or a mother and child. In order to better honour this symbolism, many consumers feel that the materials being used to create the ring should, therefore, be as pure as possible. White gold rings, for example, generally consists of about 75% gold. Platinum eternity rings, on the other hand, weigh in at between 90 and 95% pure platinum, giving them the edge when it comes to the purity factor.

Finish

Platinum eternity rings will, over time, maintain their white lustre finish flawlessly with proper care. White gold, on the other hand, will gradually lose its finish over time, eventually taking on a somewhat yellowed appearance. This is due to the fact that the white finish that the gold possesses comes partially from a coating that is placed over the metal to enhance its colour. Platinum, on the other hand, is naturally white and will not change shades over time.

Rarity

One of the biggest reasons platinum eternity rings are so highly prized is because of the rarity of the platinum itself. While the price tag for a platinum ring may be higher than that of a white gold piece, it is driven by the fact that platinum is over 30 times rarer than white gold, currently found in only two sources in the world. In fact, it take nearly 10 tons or raw platinum ore to create one ounce of refined platinum metal. The intensive labour process that goes into refining the metal to create platinum eternity rings makes them even more valuable.

Quality

Platinum eternity rings are not only stronger than white gold rings, they are also more scratch and wear resistant. Gold rings, in fact, will wear down gradually over time, slowly decreasing the overall weight of the metal over the years. Platinum, on the other hand, does not wear down, meaning your eternity ring will bear the same metal weigh twenty years form now as it does today.

Protecting Your Diamond Rings In Public (2 of 2)

We all enjoy the beauty and sparkle of diamond rings and other diamond jewellery. Because of our fascination for this amazing gemstone, diamond jewellery remains one of the most popular categories on the market. It is more important than ever to take the steps necessary to insure your investment, both financially and sentimentally, in any diamond jewellery you own, particularly when venturing out in public.

Aside from the tips and tricks already mentioned, another extremely important piece of advice is to have your diamond rings ’serviced’ on a regular basis. If you purchased your ring from a brick and mortar store, they will typically offer the service for free. If not, most jewelers will perform the check up for a minimal charge. Servicing a diamond ring is somewhat like the equivalent of taking your car in for a check up. The jeweler will clean your ring thoroughly, inspect the finish on the surface of the precious metal to make sure a touch up is not needed, but most importantly, they will check the setting or settings of any stones in the ring to make sure they are all secure. Loosing a stone from a ring is much easier to do than losing the ring itself. Unfortunately, this happens most often when a setting has begun to loosen. By having your ring checked on a regular basis, you can ensure your settings are secure and take piece of mind that your stones are safely held in place.

Regarding other forms of diamond jewellery, such as diamond earrings, necklaces, or even bracelets, proper maintenance is just as vital. Like diamond rings, all of your valuable jewellery should be taken in to a professional jeweler on a regular basis for cleaning and inspection. There are a few things you should check for at home as well before wearing any of your jewellery. Earrings should be checked to ensure the backs fit snugly and there is no chance of one slipping off. For latch earrings, typically present in the hoop style, always check that the latch fits securely in place. Even with proper care, fittings and latches can become loose over time. For necklaces and bracelets, always check that the clasps are working properly. It can sometimes be very difficult to notice if a bracelet or necklace has slipped off, so checking the clasps and fittings ahead of time is always a good idea.

One of the best things about having a beautiful diamond ring or other diamond jewellery is being able to show it off. The downside to wearing your beloved pieces out in public, however, is the risk you may be taking of losing them, damaging them, or having them stolen. By following just a few simple steps, you can help ensure the safety of your diamond rings and other precious jewellery every time you want to display it for all the world to see.

The first rule of thumb, especially with rings, is to always make sure the item fits properly. While we all know that wearing a ring that is too small can become painful, or even downright frustrating when you are trying to remove it, it is far more dangerous to take your chances wearing a diamond ring that is too big on you. The most obvious flaw with this practice would be having the ring fall off. If the ring is too big, you may not even notice as it slips off your finger. This can happen in a washroom, in a taxi, or anywhere else you may never be able to recover it from. If you have a ring that is too big, have it re-sized to fit properly as soon as you can. In the meantime, if you need to wear the ring, make sure to have it fitted with a ring guard that wraps around the back side of the ring, preventing it from slipping off your finger.

Another rule of thumb you may want to consider is the quantity of valuable jewellery you choose to wear out in public. If you are attending a gala event in the heart of the city, donning your finest diamonds rings is perfectly acceptable. If you are going into town to run errands, however, you should probably consider keeping the high value items at home, especially if you are venturing out by yourself. While we may not like the fact of the matter, women traveling alone, particularly at night, can make prime targets for would be purse snatchers. The more jewellery you are wearing with obvious value, the more susceptible you may be for a snatch and grab.

Anticipating Paris Hilton’s Next Diamond Engagement Ring

Just one day after the most romantic day of the year, the rumor mill was churning at full force regarding whether or not Paris Hilton, celebrity bad girl and hotel heiress, was secretly engaged to boyfriend Doug Reinhardt. It is said that Mr. Reinhardt popped the question in the early morning hours while the two were together in Rio de Janeiro celebrating Carnival. While some people are intrigued by whether or not the heiress has finally found true love, most of the world is more concerned over how her potential latest addition to her impressive engagement ring collection will add up.

Ms. Hilton became notorious in 2005 for her complaints that her massive 24-carat canary yellow diamond engagement ring, presented to her by Paris Latsis, heir to a massive Greek shipping fortune, was simply too heavy for her finger. Apparently, her second engagement ring from Mr. Latsis, a 15-carat white diamond was a bit too weighty as well. In order to save his beloved from the burden of wearing either of the two rings that were valued at $2.1 million and $4.2 million respectively, her betrothed bought her a simple platinum Cartier band for daily use.

Needless to say, if Mr. Reinhardt, former baseball player and reality TV star, is looking to impress Ms. Hilton with his tastes in jewelry, he’s got a tough act to follow. The couple got together in February of 2009 and have been on again, off again ever since. The rumors of the recent engagement have yet to be verified by the sight of a new diamond ring on Ms. Hilton’s finger.

Protecting Your Diamond Rings And Diamond Jewellery At Home (2 of 2)

Even if the unthinkable does occur, you still have options to help compensate for your loss. While money may not be able to replace the sentimental value of certain diamond rings or other pieces of jewellery, it can at least give you the chance to begin replacing the pieces that were taken.

If your items are stolen, even after your attempts to keep them hidden, you should be able to take comfort in being reimbursed for them through your insurance company. Always make sure you have a clause in your homeowner’s or renter;s insurance policy that covers items such as jewellery. This step alone, however, is not enough. For more expensive pieces, always keep an appraisal from a jeweller on file that states the retail value of the ring as well as a brief description of the piece. It also helps to keep a photograph of the piece the appraisal is written for with the document itself. Even for lower value items, taking photos of groups of items will help expedite a potential insurance claim later on. If taking photos of groups of items, make sure to keep a detailed list describing each piece, including an estimated retail value for the item.

Another option is having some type of serial number or symbol engraved on your diamond ring or other diamond jewelry. Most thieves don’t steal jewellery to wear for themselves. The first stop after their acquisitions have been sorted is typically a pawn shop. When a break in occurs, the pawn shops in the local area are often altered by either the owner of the jewelry that was taken or the police authorities. By having some type of distinguishing mark on the item, a pawn shop employee may be able to spot the stolen merchandise and possibly identify the person trying to pawn it. In these cases, there is also a chance you will be able to recover the lost items.

And finally, while this tip may seem rather trivial, it can be very important. If you have children in your home, particularly curious little girls who like to play dress up, always make sure your valuable jewellery is out of reach from their tiny fingers. Mom’s diamond ring can look very tempting when pretending to be a pretty princess, however, not all pretty princesses are as careful

Protecting Your Diamond Rings At Home (1 of 2)

While it can be challenging enough to protect your diamond rings when wearing them out in public, it is just as important to take the time to ensure the safety of any other diamond rings or other valuable jewellery you keep within your home. While none of us ever want to think about the tragedy that can occur during a burglary, it is a very real threat. The best way to ensure your valuables are as safe as possible if a break in were to occur is to make sure your diamond rings and other jewellery is as safe as possible.

The first thing to do, especially for high value items, is to avoid keeping them in a jewellery box. While you may enjoy looking at your most precious pieces on a daily basis when you choose a daily wear item to take off or put on, having all of your pieces in a single place, particularly a jewellery box, makes it very easy for a thief to grab all of your precious items at once. While it may not be feasible or practical to keep every piece of jewellery you own in a separate location within your home, if you do have items worth a particularly large amount of money that you only wear on an occasional basis, it may be wise to store them elsewhere.

In order to make it slightly more difficult for a potential burglar to locate your valuables, there are numerous types of products on the market made to resemble common household items, such as soda cans, fake lights switches or wall outlets, or even a box of frozen vegetables. These decoy boxes are ideal for keeping valuables in places that a thief would never think to look. Frozen peas aren’t exactly a top priority for burglars these days. If you have a large quantity of high value jewelry, you can also consider installing a fireproof safe in the house. While a portable safe is ideal for protecting valuable documents, they can be grabbed just as easily as a jewelry box and broken into off site. There are much heavier duty safes on the market that can be bolted into your floor or wall, making them much more time consuming to remove and, therefore, less appealing to burglars.

Eternity Ring

Eternity Ring

If you’ve been shopping for an eternity ring lately, you may notice that they seem to be getting smaller. More and more, the overall width of many eternity rings on the market is slowly slimming down. This has nothing to do with decreased consumer demand, however, and everything to do with the growing trend of stacking the rings. After all, why have just one eternity ring when you can have two, or three, or four?

While the tradition seems to have been born out of necessity, it continues to grow out of personal preference. One of the primary occasions the eternity ring was designed to commemorate was an anniversary. Upon being presented with this gift, the bride had the choice to either use the ring in place of her original wedding band, or add the ring as the third piece to her bridal set. Over the years, eternity rings also became quite commonly found being used in place of a traditional wedding band, or even used as a single ring to represent both the engagement ring and the wedding ring. In cases such as these, if a second eternity band was given on an anniversary, it was designed to be stacked with the original ring.

Also commonly given to commemorate the birth of a child, the eternity ring often bore not only diamonds, but the birthstones of the baby, and sometimes even the mother as well. To celebrate the joyous arrival of any additional children the couple may have, stones were typically replaced in the ring to allow the inclusion of the additional birthstones. In order to simplify the process, however, additional eternity rings were often given, one to symbolize each child.

As more and more traditions formed that involved the wearing of multiple stacked eternity rings, jewelry designers began to take notice of the trend and modify the designs of the ring just slightly enough to make them more accommodating to the new trends. Little by little, the rings narrowed slightly in size, reducing the bulk that could result from stacking rings that were too wide. They also began to incorporate smoother outside edges and settings, allowing the rings to stack flush against one another.

One of the best features about stacking eternity rings is the ability it gives the wearer to create a variety of looks, often using various colors of precious metals, colored gemstones, and stone shapes to create one of a kind looks that can be changed up in a second simply by changing the order in which the rings are stacked.

Choosing The Best Diamond Eternity Ring

14 July 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Choosing The Best Diamond Eternity Ring

If you are on the market for a diamond eternity ring, but want one that will stand out from the rest of the crowd and get noticed, there are a few simple features to look for before making your next purchase.

The color of the stones in diamond eternity rings can play a major part in how well they get noticed. Colored diamonds, for example, are extremely popular at the moment. These stunning diamond variations can be found in deep blue tones, fiery reds, and even rich blacks. For a more budget friendly alternative, as colored diamonds can be fairly costly, colored gemstones can provide the same effect. It is quite common, in fact, to work the birthstones of both the child and the mother into diamond eternity rings when they are being gifted to commemorate the birth of a child. Even for weddings and anniversaries, however, a touch of color interspersed between the clear sparkling diamonds adds a whole new level of elegance to a diamond eternity ring that is unmatched.

Many designers will carefully select the various shapes of the stones used in their diamond eternity rings in order to create more unique visual statements. While traditional rings tend to feature symmetrical emerald cut stones set flush around the band, there are several more creative options available. Alternating stone shapes in diamond eternity rings has become very popular, often pairing both square and round shapes together for a distinct design. Other novelty shapes can be used as well. Heart shaped stones, for example, can be set into diamond eternity rings side by side, each alternating stone facing either up or down to allow the stones to better fit into the ring. While the symmetrical nature of the eternity ring may be appealing to many consumers, others prefer the more whimsical nature of a slightly non-traditional setting or stone pairing.

For the easiest way to get your diamond eternity ring noticed, try opting for one of the hottest settings on the market right now. Invisible set stones are not only cornering the market in regular diamond rings, they are also growing extremely popular for eternity ring designs. The invisible setting not only gives the diamonds within the ring a true flush appearance, elegantly blending the lines where one gem stops and the next starts, they also add even further emphasis onto the beauty of the stones within the ring, as opposed to the precious metal surrounding them.

Diamond Rings Return To Classic Style

22 June 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Diamond Rings Return To Classic Style

Retailers around the globe are noticing a new trend in diamond ring sales. More and more consumers are opting for a more classic design when selecting their sparkling accessories. While the trend to create the most unique piece of jewelry in order to best express your individual personality is still very strong, experts believe it will soon be replaced by an increased demand for simple and elegant diamond rings that focus more on pure beauty than the currently popular ‘wow’ factor.

One theory behind this trend is the state of the global economy. While unique diamond rings are truly beautiful and can be extremely eye catching, they also tend to come with a much higher price tag than traditional styles. A classic ring tends to be more affordable with a lower per carat price. Traditional precious metals such as gold and platinum are also returning to their top selling spots over alternative metals. While the price of gold may still be a bit higher than usual, the past demand for the alternative metals has recently increased their prices as well.

Another related idea is tied to the fact that diamond rings are once again becoming heirloom pieces, designed to be passed down through generations. While trendy rings with unusual designs may be all the rage at the moment, when the time comes for a mother to pass her diamond ring down to her daughter, the style may have long faded. A classic design, on the other hand, is always timeless. The most traditional design, consisting of a diamond solitaire stone set in either white or yellow gold, is a design that has stood the test of time with regards to style and beauty. By investing in one of these more traditional designs, consumers can rest assured that when the time comes to hand the heirloom down to the next generation, the style of the ring will still be one that is recognized and valued.

Finally, designers believe that the woman of today simply wants a more understated and classic design when it comes to her diamond ring. While flashy and trendy will always be the preference of some women, the majority of consumers seem to prefer the simple beauty of a diamond solitaire ring as opposed to the flash and glitz of the whatever current style is being donned by celebrities or pushed by more couture jewelry designers.

Popular Wedding Traditions (Aside From Just Diamond Engagement Rings) (2 of 2)

Aside from diamond engagement rings, there are several other pre-wedding traditions that have been carried down through the years and still remain popular today.

While many people believe the idea of a bridal shower was simply a chance for the bride to gather with her closest friends to celebrate, it is rooted in much less joyous origins. In the past, every bride to be came with a a dowry. The dowry was a collection of items of value that the bride’s family provided to the groom when they gave their daughter away in marriage. The groom, in turn, agreed to take care of the bride throughout their marriage, and often provided a gift of money to her family as a token of thanks for approving the marriage. If a potential groom asked a father for permission to propose to his daughter and was denied, a bridal shower was typically held for the bride to be if she still wished to marry. It allowed the friend’s of the bride to be a chance to present her with gifts that would be combined to create a suitable dowry for her, since one would not be provided by her family. In modern times, the concept of a dowry is typically considered outdated in most cultures. The concept of a bridal shower, however, remains in place as a way for the bride’s friends to present her with tokens of their friendship to honor her pending marriage.

On a lighter note, some of the most notorious traditions for pre-wedding celebrations are the idea of the bachelor party and bachelorette party. These celebrations are held within a few days before the wedding date. Each offers a chance for the groom’s male friends to celebrate with him and the bride’s female friends to celebrate with her. Since the parties have become associated with the loss of ‘freedom’ in a sense, they do have a reputation for being fairly risque in nature. The first bachelor parties, also known as stag parties, were often occasion for large amounts of gambling. This was done by the groom as a last chance to control his own money before his wife took over the household finances.

Popular Wedding Traditions (Aside From Just Diamond Engagement Rings) (1 of 2)

It is common knowledge that June is one of the most popular months for weddings, however, it is also extremely popular for proposals as well. Sales of diamond engagement rings are extremely strong in the Summer months because of this. This tends to stem form the belief that the ideal engagement should last approximately 12 months. This was originally designed to allow the couple and their families time to get all o their affairs in order before the wedding. During the twelve month period, the couple would also start shopping for the house that they intended to purchase together once married. As weddings get more elaborate and detailed with each passing year, the 12 month engagement period is also ideal for the bride to be who needs ample planning time to bring together all of the details that will create her dream wedding. Before the vows are taken, however, there are several other pre-wedding traditions that many people follow.

The engagement party has always been a joyous affair. The engagement itself typically takes place between the couple in private. If done in traditional means, the bride’s family will know of the proposal in advance since the father would be asked for permission to propose to his daughter by the gentleman. Naturally, the man will have told his own family of his intent to propose as well. The engagement party was designed to give the couple the chance to share the good news of their upcoming nuptials with the rest of their family and their close friends. Small gifts were given to wish the couple well during their engagement period at the party. After the party, discussions about the details of the wedding itself would begin to take place.

The bride to be would traditionally choose her closest female friend to be her maid of honor. This was a highly cherished position, but also came with a great deal of responsibility. Other women close to the bride to be would be asked to take part in the wedding ceremony as bridesmaids. These roles were not as prominent as the maid of honor, but still showed the women that they held a special place in the future brides heart.

Eternity Rings Quickly Replacing Wedding Bands

Eternity Rings Quickly Replacing Wedding Bands

The eternity ring has been in existence in one way, shape, or form since the early days of civilization. Relics have been found made from various materials, such as bone, ceramic, stone, and other non conventional jewelry items. Today, however, diamonds and precious metal are the combination of choice. Marketed several years ago by one of the major players in the diamond industry as the accepted gift to commemorate an anniversary or the birth of a child, the eternity ring has become standard fare for these occasions. In more recent times, however, couples everywhere are creating their own traditions and using eternity rings in place of their traditional wedding bands.

Eternity rings can be found in two styles, half rings and full rings. The full eternity rings, by nature, are the more costly of the two since the diamonds extend the entire length of the band. The stones, however, in full eternity rings are often smaller, making the rings slightly thinner and, therefore, more comfortable to wear on a regular basis. Half eternity rings, on the other hand, tend to carry larger stones since the sides of the ring are made solely from precious metal and not set with diamonds. Because of this design, the thickness of the ring is less of an issue.

In an effort to add a bit more sparkle and shine to their bridal jewelry sets, many brides to be are opting for eternity rings as part of their bridal set in place of a plainer wedding band. More and more bridal sets with eternity style rings as the wedding band are showing up on the market as well, reinforcing this newer combination trend. In order to provide more cohesion between the groom’s wedding band and the bride’s, the mens rings are typically set with some type of small diamond accent. This provides a more unified look among the set without overpowering the masculine ring with too much of a feminine appearance. Most of these bridal sets are also designed to have a second eternity ring stacked on top of the set that matches the one being used for the wedding band. This allows the original tradition of the ring as an anniversary gift or childbirth to remain in practice.

Eternity Rings Standing In For Diamond Engagement Rings

Eternity Rings Standing In For Diamond Engagement Rings

One of the biggest issues many men have is selecting the right engagement ring to place on their bride to be’s finger when they ask the all important question. While they may almost everything there is to know about her, it’s still tough to determine which diamond engagement ring she would be happiest wearing on her finger day in and day out for the rest of her days. In order to work around this dilemma, many men are becoming slightly more creative with their jewelry buying tactics.

While tradition has determined that the man should buy the woman a diamond engagement ring first, followed by a wedding ring to present at the ceremony, some are beginning to reverse the order of the steps. Diamond eternity rings have grown tremendously in popularity over the years as stand ins for wedding bands. Brides seem to prefer the added sparkle an eternity ring gives the engagement ring when they are worn together. Since diamond eternity rings are much simpler to pick out than engagement rings, these are gradually becoming the first item purchased.

The eternity ring is presented at the time of the marriage proposal in place of the engagement ring. Once your beloved has accepted your proposal, you have the opportunity to shop for her ‘engagement’ ring together. This allows her to have full input on the ring’s design, including the stone shape and setting. The only requirement for the second ring being purchased would be that it would have to be compatible with the eternity ring. Since eternity rings are frequently used as wedding bands, more and more engagement rings are being designed specifically for use with an eternity ring, as opposed to a standard plain wedding band.

There are several benefits to changing the order around of the ring purchasing. Buying a diamond eternity ring for proposal purposes gives you the chance to offer your potential fiance the accepted gift of diamond jewelry when you propose. It also guarantees that the ring she will eventually choose to pair with the ring in order to complete her bridal jewelry set will be the one that best suits her personal tastes.

Eternity Rings – What To Do To Commemorate Your Second Child

08 June 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Eternity Rings – What To Do To Commemorate Your Second Child

One of the two most common occasions on which an eternity ring is given is to commemorate the birth of a child. The mother is presented with the ring either shortly before she gives birth or shortly after the child has been born. Eternity rings come in both half and full designs and can be set with either diamonds, gemstones, or a combination of both. The most common tradition is to have the ring set with diamonds alongside the gemstones representing the birthstone of the child. The mother’s birthstone is sometimes included as well. The dilemma arises when a couple has a second child. While the tradition behind the eternity ring is often stated as being meant for only the first child, many couples with to commemorate the birth of their second child and additional siblings as well. In this case, there are two possible options to consider for either modifying or adding to the original eternity ring.

One of the most popular options is to simply remove one or two stones from the original band and replace them with the birthstone of the second child. If you are removing diamonds, some couples use the stones to make a pair of earrings to give as a gift for the first child. If the children happen to share the same birthstone, the couple may choose to have the birth dates of both children engraved on the inside of the ring.

The second option is to choose to stack your eternity rings. If you first ring was set completely with diamonds, the second can be set with diamonds as well, each engraved with the birth date of the child it is commemorating. If the first ring included the child’s birthstone, the second can be designed to mirror the original ring, substituting the gemstones for the appropriate corresponding colors. If it is cumbersome to wear multiple rings on one finger, the individual rings can be welded together to create a single piece of jewelry. If the couple is on a budget, which is more likely to be the case as the number of children increases, diamonds don’t necessarily have to be a part of the ring. Some women prefer eternity rings set solely with the birthstones of the child, drastically reducing the cost of the ring. This also makes it much more cost effective when adding stackable rings to the set. If you still want the extra sparkle of a diamond, you can always choose to have one set as a center stone surrounded on either side by the birthstones.

Eternity Rings – Perfect Gift For Vow Renewals

Eternity Rings – Perfect Gift For Vow Renewals

If you and your spouse are getting ready to renew your vows, it can be difficult to come up with ideas on what you can exchange during the ceremony instead of the wedding rings that you already have. Some couple use a vow renewal as a time to upgrade their original bridal set. Often, over the years, financial situations improve, making it more feasible to have a more expensive bridal set. If you are not interested in straying from your original set, however, there is another option.

Eternity rings are designed to represent the unending love a couple shares with each other throughout their relationship. They can also be used to signify the unending bond between a mother and her child if given as a gift when the child is born. Because of the first significance, eternity rings are often given as anniversary gifts. Eternity rings, however, also make the perfect ring to present to your wife during a vow renewal ceremony to show that after having been married to her already, your love for her is still unending.

If you do decide to give an eternity ring, there are several ways it can be worn. The most traditional way is to wear it on your ring finger along with your original engagement ring and wedding band. Some women, however, find this somewhat cumbersome and prefer other alternatives. An eternity ring can also be used to replace the original wedding band. Since most wedding bands are somewhat plain in design, the eternity ring will add a new sparkle and shine to the wedding set, giving it new life as you renew your wedding vows together. The third option is to wear the eternity ring on your right hand, separate from your bridal set. This is the preferable option when you neither want to wear three rings on one finger, nor do you wish to give up any part of your original bridal set.

Regardless of which way you choose to wear eternity rings, using one to celebrate a renewal of vows is the perfect way to show that the love you had for each other the first time you said your vows is not only still going strong, but you plan on it lasting forever.

Pearl And Diamond Earrings

Pearl And Diamond Earrings

If you have a June baby in your life that you are looking for the perfect birthday gift for, consider a stunning pair of pearl and diamond earrings. Pearls, the official birthstone of June, are one of nature’s most beautiful wonders. They are also the one precious jewel that has some of the most beautiful mythology behind it. The beauty of pearls lies not only in their appearance, but also in the many stories and tales behind their creation.

The early Greeks believed that pearls were formed from the tears of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. The story tells that she wept tears of joy upon her rising from the oceans at birth. These tears collected and solidified, creating the beautiful pearls the found in the oceans. Many Chinese cultures revere pearls due to their strong belief that they are remnants of the complex minds of the dragons that once ruled the lands. In ancient Arabian tales, the story tells of the embodiment of the moon working her magic to lure all of the oysters closer towards her. As they grew closer to her beauty, they began to swallow the dewdrops that were lit by the moon, hence creating the pearl that was found within them.

As far as actual science goes, the facts are a bit more technical, though mystifying none the less. Pearls, in fact, are formed from minuscule sea life or parasites find their way into a clam, mussel, or oyster. The irritant triggers a natural reaction that begins to create a nacre, or barrier, around the foreign object. This nacre builds up and, over many years, a pearl is formed. Since truly natural pearls are so rare, the majority of pearls on the market are cultured. In other words, a foreign object is purposely placed in an oyster or similar creature to trigger the nacre formation.

It is possibly because of the pearl’s rich history, both fictional and mythological, that we find them so attractive today. Pearl and diamond earrings, in particular, are extremely popular, primarily due to the wonderful contrast the lustrous pearl presents against a dazzling diamond.

What To Do With Heirloom Diamond Rings Or Jewellery

What To Do With Heirloom Diamond Rings Or Jewellery

Now, more than ever, families are passing down their precious diamond rings and other diamond jewellery to the next generation. While the market for vintage diamond jewellery is astounding, with pieces fetching far more than their standard per carat price based solely on their age and the intricacy of their settings, many women have no desire to part with their heirloom jewels. The problem, however, lies in the fact that these cherished pieces often remain tucked away in the corner of a jewellery box. Often they are too small, too simple, or simply too fragile to wear. Ladies, there is a solution that will allow you to both honor the generations before you that have passed the jewellery down to you while also being able to wear it on a frequent, or even daily basis.

One of the most common practices for utilizing heirloom diamond rings is to simply have the stone removed from the ring and reset into a more modern design. I order to retain as much of the history behind the ring as possible, some women choose to have the gold from the original piece melted down to be combined with the newer metal, allowing every part of the heirloom piece to be worked into the newer ring. If the stone or stones are very small, they can be used as accent pieces in the newer ring. Manny skilled jewellers will be able to match older stones with newer ones in order to create a symmetrical design.

If you do like the overall look of the ring, but are hindered by its size and fragility, another option is to find a jewellery who can replicate the ring itself. By recreating the exact design of the ring, a jeweller can typically reproduce the ring while also utilizing modern settings and ring design techniques to create a more durable piece that fits perfectly.

The point of heirloom jewellery is to pass down memories and precious items from one generation to the next. There is nothing wrong with using the gems and precious metals to create a more modern design that still utilizes the materials given, only changing aspects of the design in the process.

Diamond Rings-Which Non Traditional Metals Are Hot On The Market?

Diamond Rings-Which Non Traditional Metals Are Hot On The Market?

If you’ve already considered white and yellow gold for your new diamond ring and just aren’t interested in either, there’s always platinum. If you have ruled out platinum as well, however, there are still a bevy of other precious and semi-precious metals to choose from to create your diamond ring. Many of the metals on the market today also make the perfect setting for mens diamond rings as well, offering a slightly more industrial edge that bumps up the masculinity factor of any diamond ring.

Along the lines of the precious metal trend, palladium is the newest craze to hit the market. A member of the platinum family, it is mixed with white gold to create what some consumers believe to be the perfect blend of precious metals. While it retains the beautiful silver luster of white gold and platinum, the surface of the metal is believed to be as close to permanent as possible. With both white gold and platinum, refinishing the surface of the rings every few years is often required to help keep the metals polished. The combination of the metals in palladium, however, seems to eliminate that resurfacing need, creating a long lasting and durable finish. Even though palladium has been around since the early 1800’s, it is just recently emerging on the jewelry market.

For the more industrial inclined jewelry enthusiasts, particularly those of the male persuasion, both steel and tungsten are becoming more and more popular in the jewelry trade. Both metals provide an exceptional level of durability and strength, ideal for consumers who prefer to wear their rings on a daily basis that may subject them to unusual wear and tear. They are both also extremely affordable, making them a popular choice among budget conscious consumers. More importantly, both metals offer a viable alternative to consumers seeking something other than precious metal and prefer a more modern approach to their jewelry. Because of the strength of both metals, they are frequently seen utilizing the tension setting for diamonds and other gemstones. They are also immune to tarnishing and well suited for anyone with allergies or sensitivities to certain precious metals. The steel, in fact, is the same material typically used in creating surgical implements and extremely popular in the medical field.

Diamond Rings-Which Traditional Metals Suit You Best?

For a long time, yellow gold was the metal of choice for diamond rings. Over the years, however, the trends have moved gradually to a whole new selection of precious metals to chose from. Taking a close look at each metal can help you determine which is your best bet when buying your next diamond ring.

Yellow gold, of course, is the most traditional precious metal. Many consumers feel that its rich contrasting colour better helps display a diamonds natural beauty. The other benefit of a yellow gold setting is the fact that, as far as the colour of the diamond goes, stones that are slightly yellower, and therefore slightly less expensive, can work well with yellow gold settings. Many people feel that a slight yellow colour in a diamond is actually preferred in a yellow gold setting as it offers a certain warmth to the ring itself.

White gold, on the other hand, is another popular choice. Along with platinum, these two metals offer a beautiful silvery luster that tends to complement the diamond in the ring, as opposed to providing contrast. The downside of this is, of course, that yellower stones tend to stand out a bit more, therefore, stones as close to colourless as possible are recommended. Both white gold and platinum are preferred by consumers who also want to enhance the beauty of their diamonds, creating a very uniform appearance to the ring itself. Some even believe that white gold or platinum diamond rings helps increase the reflective properties of the stone, creating a stronger appearance of fire and sparkle within the stone. While the two metals are very similar in appearance, they tend o vary a bit in price. White gold tends to be cheaper than platinum, ideal for consumers on a tighter budget. Platinum, on the other hand, can often carry a higher price tag. Many consumers are willing to pay the higher price because of the fact that platinum is a much rarer precious metal and can, in fact, stand up to a greater amount of wear and tear than white gold. Regardless of your choice between platinum or white gold, both metals offer a beautiful surrounding and setting for any diamond ring you may buy.

For couples on an even smaller budget, a white gold solitaire diamond ring is an even better choice. Since gold is currently cheaper than platinum, the cost for a white gold ring tends to be somewhat lower than a platinum setting. There are also women who prefer the look of white gold to platinum and others who feel that a gold bridal ring is more traditional than a platinum one. White gold rings are also ideal for uses other than bridal jewellery, especially those where platinum, typically associated with engagement rings and wedding bands, may not seem appropriate for the situation. Small white gold diamond rings can be used as gifts to commemorate events in a younger girl’s life, such as a sweet sixteen milestone or a high school or college graduation.

Eternity Ring For Mother’s Day? Why Not?

30 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Eternity Ring For Mother’s Day? Why Not?

More and more consumers are realizing that diamond rings aren’t just for engagements anymore. Thanks to some clever marketing campaigns by the big boys in the industry, as well as consumer demand for diamond rings that aren’t necessarily part of the bridal jewelry market, the selection of dazzling diamonds for any occasion has increased dramatically. With Mother’s Day fast approaching (in the USA!), why not take the time to consider a new way to present the gift of a beautiful diamond eternity ring?

Most mothers expect a visit or phone call on Mother’s Day, possibly a card in the mail, sometimes even a nice bouquet of flowers. While the sentiment may be sweet and the meaning behind the gifts genuine, why not pick this Mothers Day to surprise her with the gift of a diamond eternity ring?

While the eternity ring was designed to be a gift commemorating an anniversary or the birth of a child, why not break from tradition (or even create your own) and use this Mother’s Day as a way to present your mom an eternity ring to celebrate the gift of life she gave to you so many years ago. Since the tradition of the eternity ring as a celebration of a child is still a rather recent one, most mothers with older children never had the chance to receive one. As her child, there’s no better time than the present. You can opt for either a full or half eternity ring set with diamonds, or even choose to have her birthstone paired with yours within the ring. If you have siblings, the gift of an eternity ring is the perfect gift to give from all of you, providing additional birthstone colors to add to the ring to really make it sparkle.

There’s no reason the major diamond marketers should be the only ones able to set tradition for which rings should be given on which occasions. There is no better time than the present to begin creating your own family traditions either. While mom is most likely expecting a nice lunch out with her kids and a fragrant bunch of flowers to display proudly on her mantle for a few days, an eternity ring from her children is a gift that will last much, much longer and give her something to look at every day to remind how just how blessed she is to be a mother.

Mens Diamond Rings Continue To Hold Ground In The Market

30 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Mens Diamond Rings Continue To Hold Ground In The Market

While the diamond jewellery market will most likely always remained geared to those of the female persuasion, there is a corner of the market that is still being reserved for the male population. Mens diamond rings, though not a large percentage of the diamond jewellery trade, continue to remain a steady fixture as part of retail offerings.

One of the main places the increase of mens diamond rings can be seen is in the bridal jewellery market. As more and more women’s bridal rings begin to incorporate diamonds, either as accent stones or as centerpieces, the man’s wedding band has been designed to include diamond accents as well in order to better complement the woman’s design.

For everyday wear, the mens diamond ring is also making somewhat of a comeback. In the past, the idea of a man’s diamond ring has typically been associated with extremely large and sometimes overpowering gold rings encrusted with diamonds. While these rings did portray a sense of high dollar value, their overall visual appeal seemed to fade out over the years. The diamond rings of today are a bit more refined and posses a stronger sense of sophistication and elegance. Most often, they are simple bands either set with a single diamond or accented with several small stones.

Some experts believe the resurgence of the men’s diamond ring is due, in part, to the influx of alternative metals in the jewellery market. In the past, men were limited to either yellow or white gold for their rings. Even when platinum rose in popularity, the basic color choices remained constant. Today, however, metals such as titanium, palladium, and tungsten allow a much wider range of color options for men’s ring. With the growing selection of finish options, including brushed and satin finishes, the overall number of possibilities have increased dramatically. Another popular choice for mens rings is the fairly new tension setting.

As men’s rings have gone from cumbersome to sleek, more and more men are choosing to display diamond jewellery proudly. More and more women now also have a wider selection of men’s rings to choose from for anniversary, birthday, or Father’s Day gifts for their beloved. While the men’s diamond jewellery market will still never overtake the demand for women’s diamond jewellery, it does appear it will remain a contender for a long time to come.

The Twilight Diamond Ring Stirs Up Controversy

30 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The Twilight Diamond Ring Stirs Up Controversy

Who would have thought one of the hottest jewellery crazes to hit the market this year would center around a diamond ring replica of a movie prop? We’ve all seen replica rings from blockbusters such as The Lord Of The Rings, Titanic, and other Hollywood masterpieces on the market before. Celebrity ring replicas are commonplace once the original has gained a certain level of notoriety. However, retailers believe that this will be the first piece of movie based jewellery that will be in such high demand. Unfortunately, it will also be one of the only ones to come with such a wave of controversy attached to it.

While I will admit that reading Stephenie Meyer’s was a guilty of mine that I kept well hidden from friend’s an co-workers in the beginning before Twilight mania hit full force, it’s very easy to see that the vast majority of the Twilight fan base is comprised of young girls in the pre-teen category. Given this age group’s natural propensity to follow hot trends, paired with the not so unattractive appearances of the movie’s leading men, this growing army Twilight didn’t surprise anyone. This fan base, however, is the main reason the new replica ring is causing such a stir.

The ring itself, a beautiful pave diamond design, is designed to be an engagement ring, just as it is in the latest Twilight movie Eclipse. Aside from the price tag of £1,300 for the genuine gold and diamond version, critics are wondering why an engagement ring would be marketed to such a young fan base. Granted, there are less expensive models that go for £330 and £400, with the lower price design better intended as novelty jewellery than an actual engagement piece, but this hasn’t stopped the controversy. Parents and other groups are concerned that this latest piece of merchandise to come from the Twilight phenomenon will do nothing but encourage younger kids that teen engagements are perfectly acceptable. While other celebrities with fan bases the same age has encouraged items such as purity rings, or abstinence rings, an engagement ring marketed towards kids of the age group seems preposterous. Critics claim the Twilight ring, on the other hand, is doing little to encourage abstinence and, instead, makes the idea of high school girl engagements seem like a great idea (even if the guy proposing is more than a few centuries older than his bride to be).

Customising Your Eternity Ring

29 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Customising Your Eternity Ring

One of the things people tend to like most about their most cherished pieces of diamond jewellery are typically related to the uniqueness of the piece. While classic designs still remain popular, and will continue to do so for years to come, there is a certain appeal to owning a piece that is able to strike up a conversation and get noticed for something other than sheer size. When it comes to eternity rings, many people don’t seem to realise just how many options they have to make their ring appear as one of a kind as possible.

One of the easiest ways to add a touch of uniqueness to your eternity ring is with a splash of color. It is a widely accepted tradition to include the birthstone gems of the child, the mother, or both in an eternity ring that is being given to commemorate the birth of a child. When multiple children are born, subsequent birthstones can be added to the ring as well. Given the number of beautiful birthstone gems on the market, this is one of the quickest ways to have your eternity ring noticed. For an extra touch of flair, consider using coloured diamonds in place of the birthstones. With the wide variety of both natural and lab created coloured diamonds on the market, it is easy to find a colour close in shade to the birthstone gem. Many people actually favor coloured diamonds over their similarly coloured birthstones because of the increased vividness of colour that the diamonds can offer.

Another way to make your eternity ring unique is by the shape of stones you select to comprise the ring. Princess cut and emerald cut are two of the most popular choices for eternity rings because of the symmetry they offer when set side by side. While these two cuts do, in fact, make for beautiful rings, if you are looking for something unique there are a few other choices. A simple classic cut round stone in an eternity ring makes for a very eye catching piece. While still symmetrical in appearance, the round cut stones offer a larger area of open space between the stones that can be filled in with precious meta or left somewhat open to allow even more light in to his the stones. Another hot trend is somewhat mismatched stones. Once again, still symmetrical in nature, many rings can be found that are comprised of two different shapes of stones in an alternating pattern. One of the most visually striking examples is an eternity ring that includes both round cut stones and princess cut stones laid side by side.

Why Does a Diamond Ring Pull In Such a High Price At Auction?

26 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Why Does a Diamond Ring Pull In Such a High Price At Auction?

The news, as well as this blog, is constantly reporting on the high price figures being brought in by major jewellery house auction sales around the globe. Christie’s, Southeby’s, and Bonham’s are just a few of the major players that host these multi million pound events on a regular basis. As an average consumer, most likely anticipating spending a few thousand on a diamond ring, it is natural to wonder form time to time how some pieces can see at auction for hundreds of thousand.

The most important aspect of these six digit pieces is based on the actual size of the stone. While an everyday consumer may be shopping for a diamond solitaire ring weighing between one and two carats, a bidder at one of the major auctions is ready to invest in double digit carat weights. Because of the nature of diamonds themselves, the larger the carat weight of a single finished stone is, the higher number the stone will sell for on a per carat basis. This is due primarily to the fact that larger diamonds are much harder to find and to cut with successful results. Smaller stones, on the other hand, are very simple to cut from the average sized rough stones pulled form a diamond mine.

Quality can also play a key role in the final selling price. While it may be easy to find a high graded diamond on the open market, even average consumers know that the closer to perfect a stone is rated, the higher the per carat price will be. As the stone becomes larger in carat weight, the chances of a near perfect grading become extremely rare. The majority of the larger stones up for auction by the major houses are, in fact, frequently closer to perfect on the grading scale than not.

One of the least tangible qualities for the final selling price of a diamond has nothing to do with the stone’s size or quality and everything to do with it’s history. A five carat diamond ring will still sell for six digits at auction. A five carat diamond ring with a story behind it and a rich, or even infamous, history can sometimes sell for twice as much. A diamond’s selling price can, in fact, be influenced significantly by the age of the diamond and the owners it has had over the years.

The Long & Short of Diamond Earrings

The Long & Short of Diamond Earrings

When people think of buying diamond jewellery for a loved one, images of diamond rings are typically the first thing that comes to mind. In certain relationships, however, a diamond ring as a gift may send the wrong signals or give the wrong impression to your significant other. Since diamond rings are almost always associated with some type of bridal or anniversary jewellery, if you simply want to present your beloved with a token of affection, a diamond ring isn’t always the best option. For a more no strings attached approach, consider the beauty of diamond earrings next time the thought of a gift crosses your mind.

Diamond earrings are classy, sophisticated, and possess all the beauty and wonder of diamond jewellery without the sometimes hidden meaning that can be associated with rings. Diamond earrings can often be more versatile than a diamond ring as well, depending on the style and design you have chosen.

If you’re on the market for something simple and classic, intended for everyday wear, a pair of diamond stud earrings is your best bet. Available in an array of precious metals, carat weights, and shapes, diamond solitaire earrings can be the perfect gift to show her that she deserves the beauty of diamonds. If you are searching for something a little more unique, but still want the overall classic and simple design, consider a pair of colored diamond stud earrings. With a rainbow of choices to choose from, ranging from stunning black to sunshine yellow, colored diamonds are the newest way to add a touch of flair to a classic piece of diamond jewellery.

Diamond hoop earrings are also the perfect choice for a modest yet beautiful gift. Even if you are looking for something that makes a slightly bolder statement, larger diamond hoops or coloured diamond hoops are a great choice. For everyday or professional wear, simple hoops with either diamond accents or pave diamonds are an excellent choice.

When it comes to length, diamond earrings have plenty to offer in that category as well. With a variety of diamond drop earrings, diamond journey earrings, and diamond chandelier earrings, there is guaranteed to be a pair to suit just about everyone’s personal tastes. While these styles may not necessarily be suited for everyday wear or office attire, they can be ideal for a woman who enjoys entertaining or going out on the town. Besides, nothing pairs with a little black dress better than a pair of gorgeous diamond earrings.

The Four Cs Of Eternity Rings

22 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The Four Cs Of Eternity Rings

While most people only think of the four c’s of diamond classification when buying a solitaire stone, taking them into account when selecting an eternity ring is just as important, if not more so. In a diamond solitaire ring, cut, clarity, color, and carat weight all play a major part in the overall appearance of the ring. However, because it is a solitaire ring, lower ratings in one or more of the four categories may not be as noticeable as one might think.

Colour is one of the best examples to use to explain this. For example, if a solitaire ring has a slight yellowish tint to it, this can sometimes go unnoticed since there is no point of reference for the single stone. In an eternity ring, on the other hand, it is crucial to ensure every stone in the ring is as close to one another in colour rating as possible. Since the ring contains multiple stones, all set side by side, any colour variations between the stones can become blatantly obvious. Reputable jewelers will always select stones with identical or nearly identical colour ratings to ensure the stones are all coherent in appearance.

Clarity is a similar factor when selecting stones that can be just as vital as colour. While it isn’t necessary to have every stone rated high on the clarity level, the stones should all be similar in their clarity rating. Most consumers wouldn’t be able to afford an eternity ring comprised solely of flawless stones. Regardless of the clarity rating, however, the stones should be able to present a uniform appearance.

When it comes to carat weight, a jeweller must also be careful to choose stones that are all identical or nearly identical carat weights to be set into an eternity ring. Since multiple stones are set into the ring, any variation in carat weight can cause an uneven appearance or potentially lead to a loose setting. As long as all of the stones in the ring are as close to the same size as possible, the ring will have a sleeker appearance and the setting will be able to properly secure each stone snugly.

Cut is another important factor in stones chosen for eternity rings. While most people believe that the cut of a stone describes its shape, it actually refers to the way the stone’s surface is cleaved and shaped. The cut of a stone can significantly affect the sparkle and fire that a stone contains. Similar or identical diamond cuts produce a visually cohesive eternity ring.

Deciphering Diamond Earrings

Deciphering Diamond Earrings

If you’re on the market for a new pair of diamond earrings for yourself or a loved one, knowing the different styles in advance can make your task a lot easier. Knowing exactly what you’re looking for in advance can make shopping a breeze. Even if you just have a general idea of what style you’d like, it can also make a substantial difference in the amount of time it takes you to find that perfect pair. Even still, there are people who prefer to just shop until something catches their eye. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this method either, but even still, some knowledge of the different styles available may help point you in a direction you wouldn’t have through to look in before.

The most common style of diamond earrings are solitaire or studs. Essentially, these are single stone earrings in a fairly simple prong or claw setting. Some solitaires are becoming increasingly popular when bezel set as well. This involves wrapping the outer edges of the stone in the precious metal to secure it, as opposed securing it with the prongs. For some people, the smoother lines afforded by bezel set studs are more appealing.

The second most common type of diamond earrings are hoops. Whether you prefer simple ear hugging hoops, or more bold larger pieces, the diamond hoop earring is a classic piece that will never go out of style. One of the more popular styles for sale right now are channel set hoop diamond earrings. In fact, one of the most common styles of earrings that come as part of a matching set are the channel set designs, perfect for pairing with a similar set eternity ring. Other styles include primarily precious meal hoops set with smaller stones embedded within them, more as an accent feature than a primary focal point.

The most popular trend on the market right now, thanks to multiple celebrity sightings associated with the style, are chandelier earrings. Much more than a simple stud or hoop, chandelier diamond earrings are often elaborate and intricate curves and swirls of precious metal dripped with diamonds. They can be small and delicate, or bold enough to turns the heads of anyone you pass by. The designs on the lower end of the price point use the diamonds to accent the beautiful designs worked in precious metal. The higher end styles, however, have every curve and surface set with stones.

Regardless of your style or personality, diamond earrings are the perfect accessory, the perfect gift, and the perfect way to treat yourself.

Hottest New Celebrity Engagement Ring Sightings

Hottest New Celebrity Engagement Ring Sightings

As we all know, one of the hottest bits of gossip when it comes to celebrity sightings is which girls are sporting diamond rings on their engagement ring fingers. Recently, a bevy of beauties have been snapped donning their new diamonds.

Jude Law, Hollywood bad boy extraordinaire, is keeping the rumour mills buzzing with talks of his reconciliation with once jilted Sienna Miller. Victim of the infamous nanny scandal, Miller is said to have been seen on several recent occasions wearing the original engagement ring that Law had given her before their initial split years ago. Sources are split on whether or not the couple truly has reconciled, or if Miller is simply sporting the ring as a sentimental piece. After all, the engagement ring was impressive enough in appearance to make nearly any woman want to wear it, regardless of their current relationship status.

In more wholesome news, teen heartthrob and Disney good boy, Joe Jonas, is rumoured to be shopping for a promise ring for his equally wholesome sweetheart, Demi Lovato. While a promise ring is the step before an engagement ring by tradition, it still represents a major step for the two lovebirds if the gift giving does take place. With their anniversary approaching, sources say that Jonas has been actvely searching for the perfect ring with jewellers such as Tiffany & Co. as his possible sources. The promise ring route does not come as a surprise for Jonas given the resurgence him and his brothers have created with more wholesome values amongst young adults.

If the promise ring rumours are true, it won’t take long for the engagement rumors to begin flowing in. Fans are also wondering if Lovato would eventually expect a ring similar to the one Joe’s brother Kevin presented to his girlfriend Danielle Deleasa last year. When photos of her engagement ring surfaced, fans were wowed by the nearly 3 carat center diamond surrounded by nearly a carat of pave stones. If Lovato was as impressed with the ring as everyone else was, we’re sure she’ll be hoping that Joe takes a cue from his brother regarding his selection of engagement rings.

Finally, Australian TV sweetheart Ruby Rose has confirmed to the press that she is, in fact, engaged to supermodel Catherine McNeil. Rose is sporting an emerald cut diamond ring while McNeil is said to have been seen with a diamond and sapphire ring.

More Celebrity Engagement Rings Spotted

The one gear in the rumour mill that never seems to stop turning is the one directly tied to engagement ring spottings. The need to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to the latest celebrity engagements is one of the strongest factors when it comes to keeping gossip at the top of the headlines. Now, more than ever, celebrities seem to be giving fans just what they want, as witnessed by the latest batch of hot engagement ring sightings.

Carrie Underwood, country starlet and American sweetheart, recently garnered top honours at the 2010 ACM Awards and went down in history as the first female country singer to receive the award for Entertainer of the Year on two occasions. More importantly, she was seen donning a seemingly massive diamond ring on her all important finger at the awards show. Sources have confirmed that Underwood is, in fact, engaged to Mike Fisher, a 29 year old hockey player with the Ottawa Senators. The couple have been together for nearly a year and sources also say that friends and family of the 26 year old Underwood couldn’t be happier for her.

Know for her portrayal of Kelly Bundy, blonde bombshell daughter of the nowhere near father of the year Al Bundy on the hit TV show Married….With Children, Christina Applegate’s sources have confirmed her recent engagement. Said to have taken place on Valentine’s Day this year, Applegate was proposed to by long time boyfriend Martyn Lenoble. One of the original members of the alternative rock group Porno For Pyros, Lenoble decided that two years of dating was long enough for him to know that Applegate was the ‘one’. Sources close to Applegate are happy to finally see some positive changes in her life after recovering from breast cancer as well as the death of ex-boyfriend due to drug overdose. After making a full recovery, both physically and emotionally, the recent engagement seems to be a fresh start for the blonde beauty.

In not so happy news, new light has been shed on the bitter end to the engagement between reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her New Orleans Saints football boyfriend Reggie Bush. Though its been quite some time since she was seen wearing her engagement ring, the truth about alleged infidelity, coupled with her notorious Playboy magazine spread, make it much clearer why the split was inevitable.

Diamond Earrings – The Perfect Gift

19 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Diamond Earrings – The Perfect Gift

Regardless of age or occasion, a pair of diamond earrings can be the perfect gift to express your love for someone.

While I’m sure every mother appreciates a nice card and possibly a lovey bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day, can you imagine her surprise if you presented her with a stunning pair of diamond earrings? You can still throw in the card and flowers for posterity’s sake, but the gift that will last a lifetime will be the earrings. With the wide variety of diamond hoop earrings on the market, this style would be the perfect accessory for your mother. They are simple and classic, but still show an ample amount of style and sparkle to make everyone take notice.

If you have a daughter with a birthday approaching, consider a pair of diamond solitaire earrings. While your two year old will still prefer a toy that makes an obscene amount of noise and contains every color of the rainbow, your older child or teenager would be more appreciative than you can imagine when presented with the gift of ‘real’ jewellery. She will also revel in the chance to show off her new fiery diamonds to all her friends. The benefit of diamond solitaire earrings for this occasion is the fact they are available in such a variety of carat weights and price points that it is never a problem to find the perfect set to complement your child’s age as well as your budget.

Does your wife or significant other have a birthday approaching? If you’re not married yet, buying her a diamond ring as a token of love can sometimes send the wrong signals. If you are married, there is a good chance your wife already has a selection of diamond rings to choose from, especially with the advent of the eternity ring, the three stone diamond ring, and any other ‘traditional’ diamond rings on the market for married couples to commemorate milestones. Diamond necklaces are nice, but don’t tend to be worn as often as other kinds of jewellery. The gift of a pair of diamond earrings is the perfect solution to both scenarios. They can be dressy or casual, simple or bold, classic or unique. Whatever her tastes or your budget, there will be a pair of diamond earrings to cater to both.

The Beauty Of His And Hers Wedding Rings

19 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The Beauty Of His And Hers Wedding Rings

Traditionally, one of the first items a couple would purchase together was their wedding rings. While times have changed and things like homes and family cars are often discussed prior to marriage, the selection of wedding rings is still as important now as it ever was. One of the easiest ways to select the most fitting set of bands is by choosing from the wide selection of his and hers wedding rings on the market. His and hers weddings rings not only offer the convenience of having matching bands that complement each other perfectly, they can also offer a cost savings over purchasing rings individually.

Understandably, one of the most difficult aspects of choosing his and hers wedding rings is being able to find a set that caters to both personal preferences. On the most basic level, the choice of precious metals can be one of the most challenging decisions to be made. If both parties prefer the true gold tones, then the choice of yellow gold is fairly straightforward. However, if silver tones are preferred, the field is expanded drastically to include white gold, platinum, palladium, or any one of the many alternative metals on the market today. Even though all of these metals are silver in tone though, they can still appear very different when compared side by side. Budget can also play a huge factor in determining which silver toned metal option should be chosen. For couples that are more divided on their color choices, dual or tri-coloured gold bands are a common option. Wedding band sets featuring alternating bands of white and yellow gold are common, with rose gold also being an option for a third complementary colour. Other sets may feature on of the gold tones as the primary band composition, with another tone used for accent designs or inlaid decorations.

In an attempt to add a bit of novelty to some sets of his and hers wedding rings, some designers have created sets that when held side by side create a design such as a heart or a flower. Other sets have been inlaid with intricate carvings in order to enhance the appearance of an otherwise plain band. Some can be found set with diamonds, with the bride’s band resembling an eternity ring more than a wedding band. With these sets, the groom’s band is often accented with diamonds in an attempt to create a coherence between the ring sets.

How To Select The Perfect Diamond Ring – Style Says it All

How To Select The Perfect Diamond Ring – Style Says it All

Even if you know your girlfriend or wife’s ring size, choosing the perfect style of diamond ring can be one of the most difficult tasks you will be faced with in your relationship. Okay, so that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it is still a difficult thing to do none the less. The key to selecting the perfect diamond ring is to take your time and pay attention. Don’t ever try and rush into buying a diamond ring unless you know absolutely what type of ring would suit her best. Take the time to study the jewelry she does wear on a regular basis in order to get clues as to which diamond ring will melt her heart the fastest. Pay close attention to all her jewelry as well, not just her choices in rings.

If all of her jewelry that she wears on a daily basis is silver or white gold, chances are she may not be a fan of yellow gold. On the other hand, if all she wears is yellow gold, a platinum or white gold diamond ring may not be the ideal choice to surprise her with. If she does wear a mix of both, you may want to consider a two or three tone gold ring. With a combination of yellow and white gold in the band, this would allow her to accessorize the ring with both her white gold and yellow gold jewellery.

If all of her earrings are solitaire studs and every ring she owns bears a single stone, there’s a good chance a cluster ring may not be to her liking. All the same, if all of her jewellery is set with multiple stones, a solitaire ring may be too simple for her tastes. If she prefers a combination of both, consider a solitaire ring with side stones. This style offers a central focal point stone along with two or more smaller stones to accent it.

Finally, pay attention to what type of statement she tends to make with her jewellery. Classic pieces that convey a sense of style and sophistication would end one to think a more traditional diamond ring would be your best bet. On the other hand, if she prefers more non-traditional pieces that tend to make a fairly bold statement, choose a ring with an unusual setting, a uniquely cut stone, or other quality that helps set it apart from other diamond rings on the market.

Diamond Rings Settings – Now You See Them, Now You Don’t

16 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Diamond Rings Settings – Now You See Them, Now You Don’t

Settings in diamond rings have stayed fairly consistent over the years with claw or prong settings and bezel settings being the most common. A prong setting is essentially a metal claw that sits flush against the sides of the stone and wraps slightly over it on top to secure the stone in place. In a bezel setting, the metal is wrapped slightly over the entire outer surface of the stone. Today’s trend, however, is the advent of the invisible diamond ring setting.

In standard invisible set diamond rings, the stone is secured from the underside. The setting styles is primarily used for princess cut stones that are able to sit completely flush against one another. Most often, the stones are found in eternity ring like bands, set within a channel or groove in the band itself. The stones are held in place by a special setting within the band that grips the girdle of the stone, as opposed to wrapping over the top of it. When the stones are set flush against one another, the setting on the girdle is not visible. The diamonds themselves, if chosen and set properly, actually appear to blend into each other.

The invisible set diamond ring is one of the most difficult to create and, therefore, are not as widely available on the market as traditional set diamond rings. They are, however, a thing of beauty. If you are in the market for an invisible set diamond ring, make sure to do your research and choose a reputable jeweler who will be able to create a diamond ring that takes full advantage of the beauty an invisible setting can offer.

The $58k Diamond Ring Swindle

16 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The $58k Diamond Ring Swindle

There are several ways to steal a diamond ring these days. You can choose to rob a bank and then use the stolen money to buy yourself a ring. You could go directly to the source and rob the jewellery store. You could even break into someone’s home and steal their diamond ring. Roger Adler’s fiance, on the other hand, came up with a much more creative way to swindle a diamond ring from his pocket onto her finger.

Rena Hope Friedman is the supposed con artist in question and is currently being sued by Adler who is seeking reimbursement for the cost of the ring. According to authorities, after dating for only a short period of time, Adler said he was pushed into proposing to Friedman sooner than he had planned. Under pressure to commit, he did whatever it took to make her happy, including placing a stunning $58k platinum and diamond ring on her finger when he proposed. Just a few days later, he began to realize just how much she had manipulated him into proposing when she coldly and abruptly broke off the engagement. He asked for his ring back, as would be customary in this case, but she refused to return it to him.

While tradition states that the ring should be returned to the one who purchased it when the other party is the one to call of the engagement, Friedman was, apparently, not a very traditional person. Instead of chalking the ring up as a loss, Adler did some background checking and found that he wasn’t the first person to fall for the rush proposal followed by a refusal to return the ring. It is said that he is still trying to determine just how many potential victims, and diamond rings, Friedman has been able to rack up over the years.

Bay Hill Jewellers Has Problems Holding Onto Their Diamond Rings

Bay Hill Jewellers Has Problems Holding Onto Their Diamond Rings

Bay Hill Jewellers, a specialty jewellery store in Orlando, Florida, seems to have quite a problem holding onto their inventory of diamond rings. For the third time in five years, the store was robbed and yet another costly diamond ring was the target of the theft.

Authorities in Orange County are currently searching for the suspect who showed up at the store last Thursday dressed in hospital scrubs and began to chat up one of the clerks. He explained to her that he was employed by golf legend, Arnold Palmer, and was the celebrity’s personal radiologist. Excited about his upcoming engagement plans, he began looking at a selection of diamond rings, wanting to find the perfect one to pop the question to his future bride to be.

Believing his claim to fame as a doctor to the stars, the girl behind the counter decided to forego the usual identification check before allowing him to view the rings outside of the case. As a supposed radiologist with a formidable salary, he asked to look at a stunning 3.5 carat diamond ring in an incredible yellow color. Valued at over $50,000, the yellow diamond rings was truly and eye catcher and would most likely guarantee his beloved would say yes to his proposal of marriage. Not sure if this truly was the ‘perfect’ ring, the doctor in disguise went to point at another ring to look at. As the clerk turned to see which one he was pointing towards, he took off running with the yellow diamond ring in tow.

This robbery marks the third time in the past five years the store had been a victim of a jewellery robbery. This time, unfortunately, the owner has no hopes of being reimbursed by her insurance company for the loss. Since the sales girl failed to ask to see some form of identification from the man, any insurance claim the store’s owner would have had is voided.

Diamond Engagement Rings – No Longer a Game of Solitaire

14 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Diamond Engagement Rings – No Longer a Game of Solitaire

Trends change over the years and, apparently, as the love of diamonds grows, so does the number of stones in diamond engagement rings.

While solitaire diamond engagement rings still remain very popular, trends continue to emerge on the market spotlighting multi-stone diamond rings for popping the question. For the most part, these new styles of diamond engagement rings still have a significant center stone that remains the focal point. The difference is, the center stone, once set within the band of precious metal all by itself, has finally gotten some company. Center stones can be shouldered by diamonds of the same shape in slightly smaller sizes. They can also be surrounded by small diamonds that completely encircle the setting. Diamond studded bands are also common on both of these styles.

One of the first things most people notice about these multi-stone diamond rings is their resemblance to vintage pieces, particularly from the art deco period. In order to make up for the high cost and rarity of diamonds during the art deco period, jewelers accommodated for smaller center stones by encircling them with diamond chips or very small stones. This took the emphasis off the size of the center stone and, in most cases, made it seem much larger than it actually was.

Whether you are looking for a more affordable way to buy a diamond ring that gives the illusion of being more substantial than it actually is, or you simply want the extra diamonds to surround your already substantial center stone, multi-stone diamond engagement rings are the perfect solution.

Elizabeth Taylor – The Dame of Diamond Rings

14 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Elizabeth Taylor – The Dame of Diamond Rings

The rumour bill is running at full speed with talks of Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s secret engagement to long time companion Jason Winters. Together since 2007, the couple has valued their privacy above all else, further proving the point that if they were to get engaged, and subsequently married, it would be a very private occasion. Mr Winters would be the ninth husband for the Hollywood star. While the news of an engagement would certainly make headlines, it is the engagement ring that could potentially take the front page. The violet eyed beauty is, of course, well known for her love of diamonds and diamond rings.

Proud owner of the Krupp diamond, a 33 carat asscher cut stone, Miss Taylor is no stranger to the finer things in life when it comes to jewelry. Presented to her as an engagement gift by former husband Richard Burton, the Krupp diamond still proudly displays on her finger, having been set into a ring.

The most well known of all her gems, however, would be the Taylor-Burton diamond. At nearly 70 carats in size, the diamond was created from a rough stone weighing nearly 250 carats. It took jeweler Harry Winston nearly half a year just to visually inspect the stone to determine the best way to actually cut it. The finished pear shape of the Taylor-Burton diamond was the largest of the stones to be cut from the larger diamond.

Burton entered a bidding war on Taylor’s behalf when the stone originally went up for auction in 1969, placed there by its then owner Harriet Ames. Robert Kenmore outbid everyone to acquire the diamond at just over $1 million. Determined to have the stone, Burton arranged a side deal with Kenmore and was able to acquire the diamond for Taylor. Ironically enough, Taylor no longer owns the famous diamond named for her and her late husband. In 1979, she placed the stone up for auction once more, with proceeds going to charity, and it sold for over $5 million.

Robert Mouawad later acquired the stone from the New York jeweler who had won the last auction. At the disbelief of jewelers worldwide, the stone was modified by the current owner to just over 68 carats in order to improve the overall appearance.

Needless to say, Taylor knows her diamonds. If she is, in fact, engaged, the one thing that can be certain is that her diamond ring will be another one for the history books.

The Beauty of Diamond Earrings & Necklace Sets

13 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The Beauty of Diamond Earrings & Necklace Sets

One of the more difficult tasks a woman has when selecting jewellery to wear is being able to correctly match which pieces look best with each other. One of the more difficult tasks a man is faced with when buying diamond jewellery for a loved one is not only being able to find something that will fit properly, but also something that will match with pieces she already owns. The perfect solution to both of these quandaries can be solved with the simplicity and convenience of a diamond earrings and necklace set.

Every woman loves a pair of diamond earrings and every woman loves a diamond necklace. The difficulty women have when it comes to diamond jewellery is trying to match a pair of earrings to a necklace when she wants to wear both on the same occasion. Even if the diamonds in each piece are roughly the same size, the shape may be different or the settings may not be similar. When she has a matched diamond earrings and necklace set it is essentially having three possible diamond jewellery combinations to wear. The diamond earrings can be worn on their own, as a perfect accessory to add just a touch of sparkle. The necklace, as well, can serve as an individual adornment. The true benefit of a matched set, however, is that when she chooses to wear diamond earrings and a necklace together, the set is pre-matched, eliminating the hassle of trying to determine which pieces work best with each other. From a man’s point of view, a matched diamond earrings and necklace set eliminates the guessing game involving which finger she will wear the ring on and what the correct size is.

These matched earring and necklace sets are also ideal for married women who prefer their wedding ring and engagement ring to be the only diamond focal point on their finger.

The Simplicity of the Solitaire Diamond Ring

13 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The Simplicity of the Solitaire Diamond Ring

While headlines are always focused on which celebrity engagement involved the most lavish diamond rings, including details on how many carats were in them, how many stones they were comprised of, and who designed the ring, nothing will ever replace the elegance and simplicity of a solitaire diamond ring. Even for the woman who has it all, a classic solitaire diamond ring is a symbol of class and style, timeless and treasured throughout the years.

The beauty of a solitaire diamond ring is due, in part, to its ability to draw the focus of the ring onto the single diamond. This allows the individual stone’s beauty to shine through without the risk of being lost amidst a sea of stones. The sparkle and shine of the single diamond is not diminished, but is, instead, allowed to be seen at its peak of beauty, catching the light from all sides without interference from any metal or stone around it. The solitaire stone is allowed to stand on its own and be seen for the dazzling fire it carries within it.

Aside from the benefit a solitaire diamond ring design has for the stone, it is also very versatile for the person buying it. A diamond solitaire ring can be found in any precious metal, whether it be white or yellow gold, platinum, or even the latest trend of palladium. The band of the ring can be simple and plain, keeping the focus entirely on the stone itself, or somewhat decorative, accenting the beauty of the center diamond. A solitaire diamond ring can accommodate nearly any size stone and is suited for any shape of stone as well. Whether you are a fan of two carat heart shaped diamonds or quarter carat princess cut stones, the solitaire diamond ring is a classic design suited for the widest possible range of stone options.

Treat Yourself To A Pair Of Diamond Earrings

Treat Yourself To A Pair Of Diamond Earrings

Even with the advent of the right hand diamond ring, also known as a dress diamond ring, some women still feel a bit awkward purchasing a diamond ring for themselves. While no woman should be denied the pleasure of wearing diamonds based solely on her relationship status, society’s view on buying yourself a diamond ring will take some time to fade. In the meantime, why not treat yourself to a new pair of diamond earrings.

While a diamond ring may be the first item that catches your eye when you enters a jewellery store, you should also take some time to look over the variety of diamond earrings available in the jewellery cases as well. Diamond earrings are not only just as brilliant in appearance as a diamond ring, they are also more easily noticed by others. A beautiful pair of diamond earrings is the perfect way to draw attention to your face, highlighting your eyes and smile as opposed to a potentially chipped coat of nail polish on your finger. The variety of styles of diamond earrings on the market also provide options for nearly any occasion or intended use. If you are looking for a pair of earrings to wear on a daily basis, a pair of solitaire earrings or even some simple diamond hoop earrings are the best choice. On the other hand, if you’re searching for the perfect pair of diamond earrings to complement that little black dress for a night on the town or want to add some extra sparkle for a formal occasion, one of the many styles of chandelier earrings on the market might catch your eye. Designed specifically with glamor in mind, chandelier diamond earrings are guaranteed to turn heads wherever you wear them.

So next time you’re out and about or shopping online and something catches your eye in a jewellery store window, don’t lose sight of the fact that diamond rings aren’t all these stores sell. The selection of diamond earrings available is just as wide and varied as the diamond ring market, ensuring that there is a perfect pair for every woman just waiting to be bought and worn.

Enjoy The Convenience Of His & Hers Wedding Rings

12 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

Enjoy The Convenience Of His & Hers Wedding Rings

One of the easiest ways to purchase bands for your upcoming nuptials is by looking into a set of his and hers wedding rings. Not only can purchasing matching bands save you some money overall, it can also make for a really beautiful and complimentary bridal jewellery set.

If you are more traditional and looking for a simple set of bands, they are a wide variety of plain bands on the market in a range of precious metals, including gold and platinum. The bands can vary in width depending on your personal preference, with the ‘his’ ring traditionally being slightly wider than the ‘hers’ band. Many couples who opt for a matching set of bands will choose to have personal inscriptions engraved on the inside of the band, adding a touch of personal style to the overall simple design.

If you want something slightly more ornate, there are numerous finishing touches that can be added to plain bands to give them a bit of flair. Some sets are etched with scroll work or other designs on the outside of the band. Others are carved to include one or more channels that extend around the band, providing a more textured appearance. The bands can also be set with fine diamond accents, adding a bit of sparkle to your wedding bands.

One trend that does seem to be growing rather quickly is the fact that some women are choosing to wear just a wedding band as opposed to an engagement ring and a wedding band. Because of this, his and hers wedding ring sets can also be found with a significant amount of diamond sparkle added, with the ‘hers’ band resembling something closer to an eternity ring than a traditional wedding band. In this case, the ‘his’ band is typically still set with diamonds in order to better complement its matching band, however, the number of diamonds is usually significantly less than the number in ‘her’ band.

Even when the bands only have single stones, there are a variety of new setting styles that really help them stand out from the rest of the crowd, the most striking one being the tension setting. This consists of a standard band that is cut and then bent out slightly. A diamond is then set into the point where the two ends of the band meet and, when the band is released into its regular position, the tension between the two ends holds the diamond securely in place.

The Versatility Of Diamond Earrings

08 April 2010 | Purely Diamonds

The Versatility Of Diamond Earrings

If you have ever considered buying a pair of diamond earrings, you may feel that your choices may be limited regarding style and design. This is especially true if you are not necessarily looking at the wide variety of drop or chandelier earrings on the market or aren’t particularly fond of the way a claw or prong setting looks. If you want a simple and classic pair of diamond earrings, there are more choices than just your basic prong set solitaire earrings.

One of the newest trends in diamond stud earrings involve bezel settings. While traditional diamond earrings, particularly solitaires, were set with a prong or claw setting, newer styles are opting for a smoother look. The bezel setting essentially uses the metal to wrap up and around the top border of the diamond, providing a slight frame around the stone in precious metal. The overlap helps to hold the stone in place without the need for a prong or claw setting. If you prefer a slight contrast in appearance, a yellow gold bezel setting will help your diamond stand out nicely. If you prefer a more cohesive appearance, choosing a white metal such as platinum or white gold will blend in with the stone. The added benefit of a white metal setting is that, from a distance, it can also give the stones in the earrings an appearance of being larger than they actually are. Bezel settings can be used to accommodate nearly any size or shape of stone, but tend to work best with the minimal amount of angles. For example, round or oval settings tend to look better with bezel settings than asscher or emerald. The bezel setting can also be used as part of an invisible setting. This involves multiple princess cut stones set within an earring and surrounded by a bezel setting. Because the interior if each stone is held in place by a setting underneath the upper surface of the stone, the stones are able to sit flush against each other, creating a very unique design.

If you thought traditional prong set diamond solitaire earrings were you only option, you might want to take another look at the variety of bezel set earrings available n the market. Bezel set earrings are not only beautiful, they also provide a sleeker appearance for those seeking a more refined design.

Diamond Rings Are Not Just For Fools In April (continued and concluded)

It was either the perfect proposal gone horribly wrong or the cruelest joke a guy could ever play on his girlfriend. Even as he told us the story the next day, we all sat quietly, waiting for him to get to the part where she began to pack her bags and drove off, never to be heard from again.

Back in the driveway, April Fool’s Day was quickly drawing to a close. His girlfriend sat quietly, moving from the porch to the window and back to the porch, never daring to venture to close to the car for fear of getting struck accidentally by a piece of flying clutter or chink of tan floorboard carpeting. That’s right, not only did he search the car form top to bottom, he proceeded to literally tear out the sightly worn carpeting from the driver’s seat and passenger’s seat floorboards. Tired, frustrated, and ready to give up, he took a minute to lay his head down on the seat, trying to figure out how to recover from this completely failed proposal attempt. Tossing the flashlight aside, he sat for several minutes, quietly contemplating his next steps. He truly had intended to propose. He really did have a loose diamond in his pocket that he had been saving up for for almost a year. There was no way he would be able to purchase another any time soon and even he knew his story would just seem like a classic prank he would go down in the history books for. Out of options, he decided to just go inside and explain everything to his panicked girlfriend as calmly as he possibly could without actually breaking down over the fact that he had just lost the most expensive thing he had ever purchased in his life, aide from his car which was now in tatters in the drive. Solemnly, he moved to retrieve his flashlight and, purely by chance, caught a glimpse of the item it was pointed directly at, glimmering brightly against the dull background of car steel that lie underneath the ripped out carpeting. After nearly three hours of silence between them, he went inside, properly went down on one knee, asked once again for her hand in marriage, and finally presented her with the infamous April Fool’s diamond as we all so lovingly refer to it today.

They were married the following year, on April Fool’s Day of course, and just celebrated their fifth year wedding anniversary this past week. They are happily married and will remain so as long as he abides by the rule she laid down that prohibited him from ever playing or attempting an April Fool’s Day joke on her ever again.
