Diamond Earrings – Men’s Fashion

David Beckham has always inspired the masses with his unique style and good looks, but when he first started wearing his large, rather feminine-looking diamond earrings, some of us may have wondered whether he was about to find himself in the midst of another skirt debacle. The results however, were somewhat astonishing. Rather than mocking the then-England captain, the masses responded positively, loyally imitating their fashion idol, and now large diamond stud earrings can be found on men in every corner of the country. So why has it suddenly become acceptable for men to parade around in what are essentially, girl’s diamond earrings?

The long and the short of it is that men have changed. The term modern man has existed for decades, but has evolved from describing a man who cooks and cleans, to someone much more in touch with his feminine side than many women ever thought possible – the metrosexual, i.e. a man who is actually concerned with his appearance. This new breed of moisturising, fashion following, diamond earring-wearing men, are giving most women a run for their money in the grooming stakes, leading to a new and lucrative market for products tailored just for them. Does this mean the lines between masculinity and femininity are finally beginning to blur, or are men simply getting their own back for decades of having to share their stuff?

Since the 80s, girls have borrowed their boyfriend’s shirts and even jeans, leading to a popular and recurrent trend in oversized, anti-fit fashion lines for women. The generally smaller size of a woman compared to her boyfriend, has made it possible for this act of sharing to take place. Until recently, this has always been less practical the other way around because it did not involve jewellery. In the case of a pair of diamond earrings however, the fastenings are all made to a standard size, thus enabling men and women to properly appreciate and if necessary, share their sparkling form.

With the emergence of the new modern man, various feminine trends have tried and failed, but diamond earrings seem to have stuck. Whatever the reason for this enthusiastic appropriation of a traditionally feminine ware, many women would argue that despite the possibility of having to part with their favourite pair of diamond earrings, it makes a pleasant change for men to take pride in their appearances, especially in light of the efforts most women go to in order to look good every day. In terms of the next steps for feminine fashions for men however, who knows what will be next. Taking in to account the impact he made on the men of the country with his diamond earrings, we can only hope a certain Mr. Beckham doesn’t start using handbags, or we might all be in trouble.
