The History of Wedding Rings

There are many traditions associated with marriage that people accept without really knowing the full history behind them. One of these traditions centres around the concept of wedding rings, one of the most widely recognized of all bridal traditions and the focal point of any bridal jewellery set. As you know, today wedding rings are exchanged during the ceremony and designed to symbolize the bonds of love the married couple will share with one another. Men will generally wear their wedding rings only, while women will wear their diamond engagement ring alongside their wedding ring. Of course, this is the modern tradition behind wedding rings. In order to understand exactly how wedding rings came to be such a huge part of any bridal ceremony we must first look at the rich history surrounding the use of wedding rings which stretches back to both early Rome and ancient Egypt.

In both early Rome and ancient Egypt, the first known wedding rings were created and fashioned from organic plant materials. These organic wedding rings were used as part of the original marriage ceremony and would eventually wear with time. Eventually, the plant like wedding rings would be replaced by longer lasting wedding rings that were generally created form carved wood.

The origins of the basic circular design of the wedding rings is believed to be a direct result of the wedding rings being created in a circular fashion in order to better visually represent the unending bond of marriage and the love that was shared within it. The unbroken circle of the wedding rings was the perfect symbol of eternity and was widely accepted both during these early times as well as today. While we no longer use plant material or carved wood, the shape of the wedding rings created during these times has remained.

Today, wedding rings have become more beautiful than ever, fashioned from exquisite precious metals such as the traditional white and yellow gold, the super luxurious platinum, and even the revolutionary new palladium. They also come in a wide range of styles and designs making it easier than ever for couples to find the perfect pair to exchange on their special day. From simple, yet elegant bands to more elaborate diamond or gemstone studded beauties, wedding rings truly stretch the gamut of bridal jewellery design.

It is also easier than ever to buy wedding rings in pre-matched sets, offering the expert eye of jewellery designers who take the guesswork out of which wedding rings coordinate best with one another. Pre-matched wedding ring sets can be found in a range of profiles and widths and showcase a variety of precious metals and unique finishes to give them a more personalized look and feel. Regardless of the style of wedding ring you are looking for, the selection of wedding rings on the bridal jewellery market is the largest it has ever been, giving you a nearly endless number of options to choose from as you search for your perfect wedding rings that are as beautiful as the love you have for one another.
