Wedding Ring Etiquette

Buying a wedding ring can sometimes prove quite difficult. You have to consider the ettiquette such as whether the band will fit with the engagement ring, what metal to go for, whether you want the ring to include gemstones, have detailing, or even match with your own ring.

Should I wear my engagement ring on my wedding day?

Some women opt not to wear their engagement ring at all on their wedding day, whilst others will move their engagement ring to the ring finger on their right hand during the ceremony so that their wedding band will not be surpassed.

This tends to be the most popular option for brides on their wedding day. Not only will you know your ring is safe, but it is also a brilliant opportunity to get some great shots of your rings together.

Where should I wear my wedding ring after we’re married?

This is down to the preference of the wearer. Most women will move their engagement ring back to the ring finger on their left hand after the ceremony. The wedding ring tends to be worn below the engagement ring as it means it is closer to the heart.

Some women decide to wear their engagement ring only, and others will choose to wear just their wedding ring. There are even women who elect to move their engagement ring to their middle finger so that the wedding band is left solely on their ring finger.

Should my wedding band match my engagement ring?

Should we buy our rings together or separately?

Before considering any of this, you should decide whether it would be best to go ring shopping with your partner, or to take on the task alone. That is why we have taken a look at the pros and cons of each to help you make the decision.

Benefits of buying together (+)

  • Pressure: Buying the rings together will take the pressure off finding one that your partner will love, (and it will ensure that it fits nicely with the engagement ring).
  • Matching Rings- When purchasing bands together you can ensure that both yours, and your partner’s band compliment each other.
  • They’ll love it: When shopping for the ring together you’ll know that your partner will love it as they will have chosen it themselves, and that will take one stress away from the big day!

Cons of buying together (-)

  • Cost: If you buy the rings together you’ll want to please your partner so you could end up spending a lot more than you would have if you had picked the rings separately.
  • Thoughtfulness: Buying rings together means that you don’t have to put as much effort into thinking about your partners’ likes and dislikes, as they will be there to choose one for themselves. This means the ring won’t be as special as it would have been had you picked it separately.

Benefits of buying separately (+)

  • Surprise Factor: It may be daunting choosing the wedding band without your partner, but imagine the look on their face on your wedding day when they see how much thought has gone into choosing the perfect ring.
  • Cost: You can potentially pay a lower price than you would have if were shopping with your partner as you will not be influenced by their decision.

Cons of buying separately (-)

  • Matching Rings: When buying wedding bands separately you will not know what your partner has chosen for you. This means that you could end up with rings that are complete opposites and this could be an issue if you wanted ‘his and hers’ rings.
  • They’ll hate it: There are such a variety of wedding bands out there; you could end up buying a ring that your partner would never have chosen for themselves and may end up having to change it later on.

Many people ask what the tradition is surrounding how to wear your wedding ring properly, and the answer is there is no right or wrong way.
