How to take a good engagement ring ‘selfie’ picture

It may sound like a piece of cake, but getting the perfect photo of your new engagement ring is a lot harder than it sounds. Take a look at our guide to ensure that you can show of your sparkling new rock in the way it deserves.

Get a manicure

Hopefully, (fingers crossed), your future spouse will have considered this before hand and will have already treated you to a manicure. If not don’t worry; they probably didn’t want to ruin the surprise!

Sometimes having a manicure after you have got engaged can work in your favour, especially if there is a gemstone in the ring. You don’t want the ring  to clash with you nails after all!

Lighting

When it comes to taking a brilliant photo of your ring, lighting is everything. You need to make sure that you take the photo in a light that captures the sparkle of the diamonds.

Even though it’s likely that you’ll want to show off your new bling straight away, apparently soft, natural lighting is best. So if you have been proposed to in the dark, try and take it at some point in the late afternoon the next day for the best effect.

Angle

As with lighting, the angle you take the shot is important when trying to capture your ring in the best way.

If you are trying to show of the size or unique setting of the ring try to take the shot from the side. Alternatively if you want to show off all the details of the ring try taking the photo from overhead

Make sure that it’s clean

If the ring is new this really shouldn’t be a problem. However, it never hurts to give the ring that extra bit of sparkle.

You can clean the ring by putting it in a bowl of warm water mixed with washing up liquid for 20 to 40 minutes. After this time you should take the ring out and gently brush away any residue that may have been caught in the ring with a soft bristled brush. If you think it still needs it, do not be afraid to do this again.

Choose a fabulous backdrop

Taking a photo of your new engagement ring at home with your washing in the background won’t make a very glamorous shot.

If you’re by the sea, take the photograph with it in the background. Or, if you are on a city break, take the shot near a famous landmark. That way you’ll have the memory of where you got engaged forever.

Get your fiancé involved

Marriage isn’t all about you, and your partner did have a massive part to play in the engagement process, so it seems only natural that they should be included in your ring photo.

To get them involved you can hold hands and take the photograph that way, (obviously you should have the ring on top). Or you can have your partner stand in the backdrop of the shot with their thumbs up, or with a sign that says, ‘She said yes!’
