What is a Sapphire?

The name sapphire derives from the Greek word ‘sappheiros’ meaning ‘blue stone.’

A sapphire is generally considered to be blue. The colour tends to vary between a very dark blue, and a pure blue. However, purple, orange, green and yellow sapphires can also be found. Sapphires along with diamonds, rubies and emeralds, are one of four precious gemstones. A sapphire is also the second hardest gemstone in the world after a diamond which is the first.

Comparisons are often be made between sapphires and rubies. This is because they are both a form of the mineral corundum. It is the variations in colour that separates them.

Sapphires were originally found in Sri Lanka and Kashmir, which is where most of the world’s largest sapphires were discovered.  Today the majority of sapphires are found in mines in Australia, Burma and Thailand.

Sapphire is the birthstone for those of you who were born in September. It is thought that sapphires symbolise heaven and are able to protect your loved ones from harm.
