While it may seem like the idea behind mens engagement rings is a fairly new concept, it actually dates back to the early 16th century.

During this time, promise rings were worn by both the bride and groom to be in order to symbolise their intent to eventually marry. The classic Irish claddagh ring was commonly worn for this purpose as well. Over time, however, these traditions slowly faded.

In 1926 a number of leading jewellery retailers attempted to market engagement rings or commitment rings for men. Unfortunately the trend didn't quite catch on so the focus returned on creating beautiful engagement rings for the brides to be.

In fact, the notion of bridal jewellery for men in general was fairly inconsistent up until the mid 1900's, with mens wedding rings being an optional component of the bridal jewellery set, rather than a tradition. Many believe that the strong belief in family and commitment that spread after World War II were responsible for making the mens wedding band a more common purchase.

One of the first successful attempts to market an engagement ring with a more masculine appeal came from a British jewellery designer in 2009. H. Samuel designed a titanium band set with diamonds that was styled to be a bit more elegant than a plain wedding band but less costly than a ladies engagement ring.

The notion of mens engagement rings quickly caught on, with the trend being even more rapidly fuelled by the increasing number of celebrities who jumped on the bandwagon by either buying or wearing one of these stylish new designs. This trend also offered the perfect solution for same sex couples wanting to express their commitment status and love for one another.

Today, mens engagement rings are hotter than ever and their popularity continues to spread across the globe. While there is a wide selection of styles and designs on the market to choose from, most mens engagement rings do tend to share a number of similar characteristics. Some of the most popular precious metal choices are platinum and white gold, although less traditional metals, such as titanium, tungsten, and even stainless steel can be considered popular choices as well.
