Palladium is considered one of the four precious metals, along with platinum, gold, and silver. It possesses a beautiful silver colour in its natural form and has a look and feel similar to that of platinum. Currently, palladium is considered one of the hottest precious metals on both the bridal and fine jewellery markets, with palladium wedding rings being especially popular.

Although it was discovered by William Wollaston in 1802, palladium is still considered a fairly recent trend when it comes to fine jewellery. It first made an appearance in the jewellery world in the early 1900's, when it became a popular choice as an alloy metal, often mixed with yellow gold to create white gold.

When platinum supplies became primarily restricted to use for military applications during World War II, jewellers began turning to palladium to be used in its purer form for jewellery making. At the time, however, it was very difficult to work with and somewhat costly to obtain.

In the early 21st century, the price of both platinum and gold rose dramatically. It was also during this time that new technology and casting techniques were created that made palladium much easier to work with.

It was China's jewellery markets that first took advantage of these developments as they began to create and market palladium jewellery on a wide scale basis. The trend quickly caught on and the popularity of palladium jewellery spread across the globe.

Palladium shares many of the same properties of platinum due to the fact that they come from the same family of metals. Palladium wedding rings are slightly whiter in colour to platinum and their natural colour eliminates the need for additional alloys or coatings to give them their signature lustre. They are slightly less dense than platinum, giving them a lighter weight which women, in particular, fine appealing.

Palladium wedding rings are also highly resistant to oxidation and tarnishing, making them fairly easy to care for. Considered hypo-allergenic, palladium wedding rings are an ideal choice for those with allergies or sensitivities to other metals. Palladium is also considered highly durable, making it perfect for long term wear, a feature that many consumers consider a huge benefit for bridal jewellery. Their lower cost in comparison to platinum also makes them a great choice for couples on a budget.
