Although somewhat bizarre, members of the Tidong tribe in Malaysia are not permitted to go to the toilet or leave the house for that matter, for a solid 3 days prior to the wedding. This tribe now inhabits the city of Sandakan, in Sabah, Malaysia. They believe that not practicing the three-day and night ritual would bring terrible luck to the couple by either a broken marriage, infidelity, or death of their children.

In 2010, a United Nations report showed that over 82,000 married women in Malaysia were girls between the ages of 15 and 19. In the same year, the Deputy Minister for Women revealed that nearly 16,000 girls below the age of 15 were in a marriage. Child marriage is thought to be more common among rural and indigenous communities.
