Although now viewed to be somewhat more archaic than recent centuries, after the reception, the couple are sent to their bed while the bridal party cleans up the mess. In doing so, they collected all the leftover food, punch and miscellaneous waste items - they place them into a chamber pot - and the couple are then forced to drink the contents. The idea was to give the bride and groom strength and virility on their wedding night. Nowadays, chocolate and champagne are used as a substitute, but still served out of a toilet.
