While weddings are tearful occasions for many, for the Tujia people in Sichuan, China, they are even more so...Starting a whole month in advance, the bride starts to cry for an hour everyday. Ten days into the ritual the mother joins her and ten days later the grandmother completes the tearful trio. This is said to stem from the time when a mother of a Chinese princess sobbed profusely at her daughter’s wedding - and it was from this very scene that a hallmark of traditional marriage is the Sichuan society was born.
