The Scottish ritual of covering brides and grooms in treacle, soot and flour, stems from the belief that in blackening the bride, they are able to ward off evil spirits. It still happens in parts of Scotland, including the islands, Aberdeen, Angus and Fife. Supposedly if you can handle this you can handle anything - including marriage.
