Royal Gemstone Collection: Queen’s Emerald Tiara & Necklace

Over the past few weeks, we’ve taken a closer look at some of the amazing royal rubies and sapphires that are part of the British Crown Jewels or the Queen’s Jewels.  Since this week we’ve turned our attention to the beautiful emerald, it’s time to see some of the stunning green precious gems in the royal collections.

Grand Duchess Vladimir Emerald Tiara

Grand Duchess Vladimir Emerald TiaraOne of the most breathtaking emerald pieces in the royal gemstone collection is the stunning Grand Duchess Vladimir Emerald Tiara, named for the aunt of Tsar Nicholas II for whom the tiara was originally made.  Fashioned in the 1800’s the breathtaking tiara features fifteen diamond-crusted ovals of warm yellow gold, intertwined in an incredibly ornate design.  Inside each oval hangs a beautiful green emerald pendant in a teardrop design.  The emeralds themselves can be removed from the tiara and pearls can be set in their place but the emeralds do tend to see more use in the tiara overall.  The beautiful piece was acquired by Queen Elizabeth’s grandmother, Queen Mary, in 1921 from the Duchess’ personal collection and is now part of the Queen’s Jewels owned by Queen Elizabeth II.

The Dehli Durbar Emerald Necklace

Royal collection Emerald NecklacesIt seems as if Queen Mary had a particular fondness for stunning green emeralds as the next emerald piece from the royal gemstone collection also originally belonged to her.  The dazzling emerald necklace that Queen Mary is pictured in the photo on the left, commonly referred to as the Dehli Durbar Emerald Necklace, was a gift to her from the Maharanis, the Maharajahs’ consorts when she made her first visit as the British Queen-Empress to India.

The stunning diamonds necklace, presented to her by the Maharani of Patiala, showcases nine stunning Cambridge Emeralds surrounded by dazzling diamonds.  The diamond-encircled cabochon emeralds are joined by even more sparkling diamonds throughout the necklace, including the Cullinan VII diamond, an 8.8-carat beauty that was added in at Queen Mary’s request later on.  The necklace also included a detachable pendant with a stunning pear-shaped emerald.  A second strand was added to the pendant which is where the Cullinan stone was incorporated.

While few of may ever get the chance to set eyes on these stunning royal emeralds in person, you can add a touch of royal elegance to your own fine jewellery collection with one of the beautiful emerald diamond rings.
