Trees for the Future

Diamonds are forever; our Earth should be too...

Here at Purely Diamonds we believe it is imperative that we all do our bit to look after our planet. As a company, this means looking at what we do, the impact that has on the Earth and if there is something we can do to counteract our carbon emissions.

That's why we have partnered with Trees for the Future to help combat climate change and deforestation as trees are the lungs of our planet, and we should help them to breathe. As a jewellery retailer, we not only ship our items to customers all across the world. We also have to source things like diamonds, gemstones and precious metals from various overseas manufacturers in order to offer both the best quality and the best value. We know that in doing this, our carbon footprint has an impact on the future of the planet, so we have decided to do something about it.

Our partnership with Trees for the Future allows us to start taking action by planting trees with every order placed with us, so that together, we all help to combat climate change.

For every order received, we'll ensure there are 20 trees planted with the mission to recreate forests and decrease CO2 in our atmosphere. For example, we regularly source diamonds from Antwerp in Belgium – the location of the world's largest diamond district. To offset the carbon emissions of a single one way flight from Antwerp to our HQ in London, you would need to plant three trees. Fortunately, with our 20 tree promise, you’ll be offsetting that carbon footprint and then some.

It's not just about planting trees - this will also create jobs for tree farmers in places where jobs are scarce. Trees for the Future work with thousands of farming families across the whole African continent with a focus on Forest Garden Programs in countries like Cameroon, Kenya, Senegal, Uganda, Guinea and Tanzania.

How we work with the farmers

Working with Trees for the Future not only provides trees to plant, but also the training, materials and mentorship required to help farming families nurture the fruits of their labour.

The most recent research has found that their Forest Garden programs have enabled them to end hunger for the majority of the farming families that take part. After 12 months of planting Forest Gardens, they found that 86% of farmers are food secure – compared to 13% when they joined the program.

We plant 20 trees

What type of trees do the farmer's plant?

There are three types of trees planted in the Forest Gardens; fast growing trees, fruit and nut trees and timber trees.

Fast Growing Trees such as Acacia, Sesbania and Cassia are planted in order to produce fertilizer, fuel wood and animal fodder.

Fruit & Nut Trees such as Cashew, Avocado, Citrus and Mangos are grown as they provide food for the families to both eat and sell.

Timber Trees such as Mahogany, Oak and Cedar are considered to be longer term investments due to the time needed for the trees to fully grow.

Who owns the trees that are planted?

The trees belong to the farmers that own the land and plant them. Your purchase enables us to provide the seeds, materials and training needed to grow the trees. However they are owned by, and remain the sole responsibility of the farmers as they become part of their future.

How is the tree planting monitored?

The team at Trees for the Future have developed a meticulous monitoring system that observes the number of trees planted, by whom and where they are. All the data is digitally collected so that their team can manage and track the successes and problems experienced by each Forest Garden so that assistance can be provided.

Every year, the team interviews each farmer at least twice in order to understand the growth of each individual Forest Garden and gain insight into any success at market.
