The most traditional of all diamond cuts used in diamond rings are round cut diamonds.

Round cut diamonds are most commonly seen in solitaire style diamond rings and are considered by many to be the industry standard for diamond engagement rings and are particularly popular for diamond rings as they present a very classic and timeless look that will never go out of style.

Round cut diamonds are also commonly seen on other styles of diamond rings, including diamond eternity rings and dress diamond rings and are also the only diamond shape used in diamond rings that are not considered fancy cut diamonds.

Since round cut diamonds are the most popular choice for diamond rings, it only makes sense that the second most popular diamond shape for diamond rings would be square cut stones.

Commonly referred to as Princess cut diamonds, these stunning square stones make for exceptional diamond rings. Princess cut diamonds are particularly popular in eternity style diamond rings, primarily due to the fact that their straight edges allow them to be set flush up against one another in the eternity diamond ring.

Princess cut diamond rings are also extremely popular as diamond engagement rings as well as dress diamond rings and the stones are considered fancy cut diamonds and have steadily grown in popularity over the years, making them the second most popular option for a wide assortment of diamond ring styles.

Some Princess cut diamond rings will have a slightly oblong shape that is designed to better increase the overall sparkle and shine of the stone in the diamond ring.

Emerald Cut Diamond

While we did mention that a Princess cut diamond ring may have a slightly oblong shape, it is generally more square than not.

When the diamond ring takes on a more rectangular shape, it is considered to be an emerald cut stone. Emerald cut diamond rings are fully oblong in shape with straight edges.

Emerald cut diamond rings do have slightly clipped corners which help to add extra facets to the stone in the diamond ring, increasing its overall sparkle and shine. Like Princess cut diamond rings, emerald cut diamond rings are extremely popular selections for eternity style diamond rings. This is because the emerald cut diamonds can rest seamlessly against each other, creating a beautiful look for the eternity style diamond ring.

Emerald cut diamond rings are also commonly seen in multi-stone diamond ring designs, such as three stone diamond rings and five stone diamond rings. Of course, emerald cut diamond rings also make for stunning diamond engagement rings, particularly in solitaire style diamond rings or solitaire diamond rings with shoulder stones.

Baguette Cut Diamond

Baguette cut diamond rings are very similar in nature to emerald cut diamond rings. The rectangular shape of the stones in baguette cut diamond rings makes them a very popular option as well.

The primary difference between the stones in an emerald cut diamond ring and a baguette cut diamond ring is that the stones in the baguette cut diamond ring are slightly narrower and therefore more elongated than the stones in the emerald cut diamond ring.

Naturally, given their similar shapes, baguette cut diamond rings are just as popular for eternity style diamond rings as emerald cuts are.

Baguette cut diamonds in general also make for one of the most popular choices in shoulder stones and accent stones in a variety of different diamond ring styles. The thin nature of the baguette cut diamonds makes them excellent choices for accenting side bands in diamond rings, although setting them in the other direction in the band of the diamond rings creates a stunningly bold and wide look.
