The concept of birthstones in Western culture is believed to date back to the 1st century. A Jewish historian named Josephus first made the connection between the twelve months of the year, the twelve signs of the zodiac, and the twelve gemstones represented in Aaron’s Breastplate – a sacred object worn by Jewish priests. Traditionally, a person would own all twelve stones and wear each one in its designated month. It was only in more recent centuries that birthstones became permanently associated with individuals born in a specific month.
While there are several accepted lists of birthstones, the traditional list remains the most widely recognised. This version dates back to the mid-1800s and was first printed in a Tiffany & Co. pamphlet, which described the birthstones in poetic form. Aside from a few modern substitutions, this traditional list is still commonly followed today.
January – Garnet, a deep red gem symbolising friendship and fidelity.
February – Amethyst, a purple stone representing sincerity and passion.
March – Aquamarine, once associated with bloodstone, now linked with loyalty and protection.
April – Diamond, the ultimate symbol of strength and everlasting love.
May – Emerald, a green gem symbolising health, renewal, and hope.
June – Pearl and Alexandrite, representing wealth, purity, and transformation.
July – Ruby, the red gem of love, passion, and vitality.
August – Peridot, once linked with sardonyx, now seen as a gem of beauty and protection.
September – Sapphire, traditionally tied to truth, loyalty, and royalty.
October – Tourmaline and Opal, both associated with hope and healing.
November – Citrine and Topaz, bringing joy, prosperity, and good health.
December – Tanzanite and turquoise, representing friendship, wisdom, and success.
