The birthstone for June is the Pearl – the only organic gemstone created by living creatures. Admired for their natural beauty and timeless elegance, Pearls are often associated with purity, wisdom, and serenity. For those born in June, they represent one of the world’s most unique and historic gems.

What is the June Birthstone?

Pearl is officially recognised as the world’s oldest gem. Unlike most gemstones, which are mined from deep within the Earth, Pearls are formed inside living molluscs, mainly oysters and mussels. Their origins date back thousands of years, with one of the earliest recorded discoveries being a fragment of Pearl found in the tomb of a Persian Princess in 420 BC. Pearls were also treasured in Ancient Egypt, where they were used as decorative embellishments as early as the 4th century BC.

What is a Pearl?

Pearls are formed when an irritant, such as a grain of sand or a nucleus, becomes lodged inside an oyster or mussel. In response, the mollusc coats the irritant with layers of nacre (mother-of-pearl), gradually creating the lustrous gemstone we know today. Because of their organic nature, no two Pearls are ever exactly alike.

Types of Pearls

Because Pearls are organic, they are softer and more delicate than most gemstones. To maintain their lustre:

  • Wear them often – the natural oils in your skin help preserve their shine.
  • Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wearing to remove any residue.
  • Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals, perfumes, and cosmetics.
  • Store separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratching.

The Four Main Types of Cultured Pearls

  • Akoya Pearls – Cultivated in Japanese and Chinese saltwater seas, Akoya Pearls are prized for their classic white, cream, silver, or rose-pink tones. They typically range from 3–10mm in size.
  • Tahitian Pearls – Found in the lagoons of French Polynesia, these Pearls form in black-lipped oysters and display shades of silver, grey, or black with overtones of green, blue, and pink. Sizes usually range from 8–14mm.
  • Freshwater Pearls – The most common and affordable type, Freshwater Pearls are grown mainly in China. They come in a wide variety of shapes, colours (including white, pink, lavender, and peach), and sizes, typically from 4–14mm.
  • South Sea Pearls – Known as the most luxurious Pearls, these are cultivated in the warm waters between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They can be white or golden depending on the oyster, and often grow much larger, with a satiny lustre that makes them especially valuable.

The Meaning and Symbolism of Pearl

Pearls have long symbolised purity, wisdom, and protection. In many cultures, they were believed to ward off misfortune and promote calmness. Today, they are seen as timeless and elegant gems, making them a perfect choice for bridal jewellery as well as birthday gifts for those born in June.
