Diamond Cut

Diamond cut refers to how well a stone has been shaped and faceted, influencing its brilliance, fire, and overall sparkle.

Of all the 4Cs, cut is considered the most important, as it determines how light travels through the diamond. When a stone is cut with the right angles and proportions, light reflects back through the top, creating maximum brightness and scintillation.

A poor cut, on the other hand, allows light to escape through the sides or bottom, making the diamond appear dull. This is why even a diamond with excellent colour and clarity can look lifeless if the cut is not precise.

Diamond Cut Grade List

Excellent Cut

Reflects nearly all light that enters the diamond. Diamonds with an Excellent cut grade are very rare and command more premium prices. We offer excellent cut as standard for lab-grown diamonds. Use our diamond selector tool to choose an excellent cut natural diamond.

Very Good Cut

Reflects nearly as much light as the excellent cut, but for a lower price. The most popular choice of cut grade and the cut grade that we offer as standard for all natural round diamonds.

Good Cut

Reflects most of the light that enters the diamond. Considerably less expensive than a very good cut.

Fair Cut

Not a cut we would recommend, a fair cut as light reflection is limited, reducing the brilliance of the stone.

Poor Cut

Diamonds that are generally so poorly cut they lose most of the light out of the bottom and sides of the stone.

At Purely Diamonds, we carefully select round diamonds with high cut grades as standard. For natural diamonds, we use Very Good cut stones, which offer exceptional brilliance and represent an excellent balance of beauty and value. To the untrained eye, there is little visible difference between a Very Good and an Excellent cut – both reflect light beautifully, but Very Good cut diamonds provide almost the same sparkle at a more accessible price.

For lab-grown diamonds, we exclusively offer Excellent cut stones, ensuring every lab-grown diamond delivers the maximum brilliance possible.

It’s also worth noting that some jewellers market cuts using terms such as “Super Ideal” or “Signature Ideal.” These are not part of the internationally recognised GIA grading system, which only uses five cut grades: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

This means that whether you choose a natural or a lab-grown round diamond with us, you can be confident it has been graded to the world’s most trusted standard.

Fancy Shape Diamonds (Non-Round)

(Princess, Emerald, Oval, Marquise, Radiant, Asscher, Pear, Heart, Baguette)

Diamonds cut in shapes other than round are known as fancy shapes. This includes popular styles such as Princess, Emerald, Oval, Marquise and many more.

Unlike round diamonds, fancy shapes do not receive an official cut grade. Instead, they are assessed by their polish and symmetry – measures of how carefully the facets and proportions have been finished. At Purely Diamonds, we select fancy shape diamonds with polish and symmetry of at least ‘Good’, and most are graded ‘Very Good’ or higher.

The reason there is no universal cut grade for fancy shapes is that their proportions can vary widely. While round diamonds are consistently symmetrical, fancy shapes can have countless variations in length, width, depth and outline – each creating its own unique character.

This means you can confidently choose the diamond shape you love most, knowing its beauty and quality are always assured.
