Diamond Fluorescence

What is diamond fluorescence?

Diamond fluorescence is the effect that ultraviolet (UV) light has on a diamond. When you are under an ultraviolet light, you can usually see that your white clothes will look brighter and your teeth start to glow. Fluorescence is the visible light that a diamond emits when it is exposed to the UV rays.

On a diamond certificate/grading report, fluorescence refers to the strength/intensity of the diamond’s reaction to UV light.  Approximately 1 in 3 diamonds submitted to GIA for grading show some degree of fluorescence, and around 10% show a level of fluorescence that may affect appearance (i.e., Medium, Strong or Very Strong).

GIA studies have shown that for the majority of diamonds, the strength of fluorescence has no widely noticeable effect on appearance.  They found that the average person could not see the difference between a diamond with fluorescence or a diamond without fluorescence.

We use "None" fluorescence lab-grown diamonds and "Non" to "Medium" fluorescence natural round diamonds as standard.

If you wish to have a natural diamond with a specific fluorescence grading, then please use our diamond selector tool for centre stones or contact us for a quote.
